So since I don't know my Colorado geography all that well (since i've only been there once (to Breckenridge)), I was wondering if anyone could help me out and locate some ski resorts/areas and airports near Fort Collins?

I have friends moving there soon and I thought it might be easy to get out there and crash on their couch for a week or long weekend for a ski trip that's all!

Thanks!

Dave

Fort Collins is about 60 miles north of Denver - DIA is your best bet for an airport.
As for skiing, Eldora is the closest about 1/2 hour west of Boulder. After that its up I-70 to Loveland, ABasin, and Summit County or I-70 to Berthoud Pass and Winter Park / Mary Jane and on to Sol Vista.
Check out www.coloradoski.com and click on "Resorts".
You could have a great week! If you get out this way next winter, PM me and I'll go make some turns with you!!

Thanks for the info Dino!

I was thinking DIA would probably be the best bet too. I really want to get out there and see my friends, and I like the sounds of your suggestions. Thanks! And if I do get out there, I'll be sure to let you know before I go so we can ski/ride together!

Thanks again,

Dave

The only flights direct to fort collins / loveland airport are from Vegas. DIA is less than an hour if you take E-470 toll road to I-25

This may sound bizarre but about 75 miles from Fort Collins is a smaller resort in southern Wyoming - "Snowy Range Ski Area". It's just weast of Laramie and a direct route from Fort Collins. Limited days of operation....

No lift info on this website for that area :( Anyone know what kind of lifts they have? they have 5, I suppose if that area is not open but maybe 3 or 4 months out of the year, it probably has some older equipment?

Just back from a trip to Utah and passed by Snowy Range Ski Area. The gate was locked but there was a "For Sale" sign at the entrance to the resorts access road. It wasn't completely clear if the resort is for sale or/and a bed-and-breakfast at the resort. FWIW

Well, there you go! What a bargain for a weekend vacation!

Seriously, Eldora is one of the GEMs of Colorado, and you'll have a great time. I used to spend quite a bit of time @ Winter Park/Mary Jane, and know that it's really popular with people from up north.

In fact, when talk came up about putting a tunnel under Berthoud Pass, I responded that with the amount of traffic from Boulder/Longmont/Fort Collins/Greeley it would really be smarter to put a tunnel on a straight path to the east ending up near Arvada, Boulder or so.

What do you think?

edit:
If you could reduce their travel time and provide a good experience, I think that within 10 years the people in those areas would sell their condos to people in southern Denver suburbs and buy homes in Grand County.
