I one could do this with Google Earth now (wasnt free at the time) although you dont get the same quality of terrain data. It is alot faster though

Here's a Google Earth image of Badger Pass. I just got Google Earth this week. What an AWESOME program!! I can't believe the detail in some of the images!

Yes, the new World Wind 1.4 is so cool! You can have time and then the sun goes around the earth with texture shading and everything!
For you Americans its got topo maps of all the US (I think) and 1m bw imagery for all the US and lots of other imagery in layers. You can also see mars, the moon and venus!
