I doubt that with just fishing wire, it will have to be a gravity grip to be any kind of grip. That's not meant to deter your spirit, but I'm sure others can offer advice.

Fishing wire can hold approximately 5 lbs per inch so I'm fairly confident that fishing line would work.

It's just the little area to grip on, the fishing wire is strong enough.

Well, I'd have to work hard to make fishing line work but it's the only type of cable that I can use. Also, I have a 2 small motors that could work as the detachable mechanism motors. It will have only 1 tower (I could put a couple of names on it) and will stretch across one wall in my room. It will hopefully have 12 gondola cars. If I'm lucky this will have a control panel, but that is unlikely. Does anyone know if I can get access to a lift maintenance shop in Denver or Copper?

The problem you'll have trying to go detachable with fishing line is that the cross sectional area of the line is so tiny, that any kind of mechanical grip device clamping to it will have virtually no surface area to generate any kind of static friction needed for gripping.

The other problem is that the relative difference in size between the tiny (<0.5 mm dia.) line and the large size of any kind of mechanical grip is so dramatic that passing over or under sheaves will almost certainly guarentee a deropement.

Honestly I think the only way anyone's going to have a chance at building a detachable is with a relativley large diameter (2-3 mm minimum) rope of some kind so that the difference in size between the grip and rope is minimised.

Yeah, it should be hard to generate any kind of detachable grip, so I'd attach stuff to the fishing wire to make it connect, like a lego.

I'd love to see photos of your working detachable grip, with deceleration/acceleration tires, cadencing system, etc...

no no no it dosnt have tires.. my candancing system is far from a normal lift..

the only thing my lift shares with a real one is the concept.. it detaches.. slows loads.. attaches.. etc.

my lift will look like a lift but it much simpler..

I would like to see how the detachable grip works. I am not positive but I think Boeinglover would like one too, I think he's having trouble coming up with a grip.

I also have a newly modified version of my K'Nex grip, the first detachable posted on this site. Pics in a bit.

I would like that PM, and am very eager to see the K'nex detachable grip. I had an idea for K'nex detachable grip, you could use the orange tubes that are used for the track in the roller coaster, attach the grip using a regular piece on the tube, and attach the opening of the tube to the specially designed pieces as the sheaves. You could also do it vice versa.

Could you send me the long PM w/pictures and instructions? I just figured out how the supports would be made and I don't think I'm going to use fishing wire (too thin) I'm probably going to use a long peice of wire (plastic covered). I don't know How I would do the gondola cars though, Oh well I'll think of something.

Ok you'll have to wait a day or two. I have another day of school before I can take pics of my grip. If you check out my topic in the off topic section entitled I did it! you wil see what my proto gripp looks like. Basically I took off the bottom two rodsand added one on top so there are three in a row. From that are the ttwo wheels thatrun along the rails in the terminal. From the two rods that run too the parts that providegripping force are made from one of the gray single hole connectors, one on each of the two rods. Two rods through theconnectors have wheels on them and when it comes into the terminal the two grip jaws are pulled apart then th e gri moves up and over the cable to its fuully detached positiion. You sorta need pics to understand.
