Probably it is the ski area managemaent who decides it, because they can call it what they want because they own it. Sometimes they name it after something or someone.

I've seen 'em named after the trail that they go over:

Superstar Express at Killington goes over the Superstar trail
Devil's Fiddle Quad at Killington goes over the Devil's Fiddle trail
The proposed new triple or quad chair out of the Sun Bowl at Sunapee would be the Cataract lift over the Cataract trail
Sunrise Express at Stratton goes over the Sunriser Supertrail
Seven Brothers Triple at Loon Mountain goes over the Seven Brothers trail
Chairlift n. A transportation system found at most ski areas in which a series of chairs suspended from a cable rapidly conveys anywhere from one to eight skiers from the front of one line to the back of another.

That is like asking how do parents name their children. After just about anything. Some ski areas hold contests to name their lifts. Others name lifts after their founders etc.

Dont forget that resorts sometimes have themes. Like colors eg red chair (painted red), blue chair etc. Or a numbering system like chair one, lift 2 etc.

Yea. I've seen some wierd ones, like Reggies Chair. What that has to do with a ski area is beyond me!

Notice a lot of the older more advanced chairs are called by their number insted of the name.

At Alpental they all have a German theme:

C.1 Armstrong Express
C.2 Edelwiess
C.3 Sessel
C.4 St. Bernard
Also all the lodges are a Swiss Alps style. It Makes the small area more interesting

Some are named by manufacturer and/or size.

Examples:
Quad Chair
Hall Double
Miner-double
2,400 Foot Double

Some resorts have contests to determine the name where they have people email or call in good name ideas and they choose the best one.

Ours were named after the letter/number on the master plan, which is why there's no D lift and so on. In '99 there was a push to name them so the ops supervisor picked names out of a hat. They all matched their letters (A-Alpine, H-Highpoint et cetera) except C and C-1, which got Gem and Pitchfork. Don't ask me.

We have a Red chair because we're Red Mountain.
The T-Bar because it's a T-Bar.
The Red Carpet 'cause we're Red Mountain, and it's a carpet.
Silverlode & Motherlode from a contest + we're a mining area.
I don't know where the name Paradise came from... but when it's sunny and warm in the winter, it's kinda like Paradise!
