i'm not sure why the runs on the main face are so traverse like they are but I believe it has something to do with the steepness of the mountain and not being able to create a straight down trail because when you ski donwn the winding trails on that part of the mountain, on one side of the trail, there is a steep drop while the other side is cliffs towering over the trail. Part B was answered above (i would like to add though, that the chairlifts do continue past what you se just it goes over a much lesser inclined area)
I do agree with the trail layout as being awkward because although the trail map doesn't show it, the mountain itself looks weird from the ground and it is easy to get confused where you are on the mountain.
