There has not been an official announcement yet, but every indication I have is that construction will start this spring. As soon as I find out officially I will post it up on the forum.

Aussierob, do people really want this interconnect lift? will it be a tram or gondola?

I'm indifferent, but i can't see why this lift is really worthwhile. but i could be persuaded.

It will be a 3S, a tri-cable gondola with around 30 passengers per cabin.

Thanks.

I'm not fully versed in lift talk; would that operate like a jig, whereby there are only two cabins that move back and forth exchanging places like the Lone Peak Tram at Big Sky? Any idea how many towers?

Sounds like an expensive project. I don't see what the return is. I almost think it has more value in summer than winter though.

Yup, that is the idea to market it more as a tourist skyride than ski lift I think. It will be a circulating gondola with between 26 and 28 cabins. CDN$40-50 million.

The Whistler Lift will cost $51.4 million and is designed primarily as a year round sightseeing lift as well as improving access between Whistler and Blackcomb in the winter.

Note, the buildings in Whistler will be a unique design for us. The lift itself will be very similar to the one in Kitzbuhel.

It's going to be very cool.

I read an article yesterday in the Summit Daily News about a new gondola being installed at W-B. 1300' chasm, 1.8 miles long, and 51 million USD later they will connect the two base areas. Whoa.

Yeah I have to say, the more I think about it, it doesnt really seem like its going to be worthwhile. But we will see.. And garthd, for clarification, the lift does not connect "base" areas, it connects the two main on mountain restaurants.

This will be very cool.

Now if only there was easier access to flute bowl. Still some exciting stuff there. Makes me want to torture my dad to take a few days in the workweek just to go there.

The good thing about Flute right now is that it is exciting and good snow and everything. If they build a lift in there then some areas will be regraded and the good snow skied off pretty fast.

I saw that on the web cam also, very cool. Myself, I think this will be a great addition to WB. Having to go all the way down to WV to change mountains really eats a lot of time, after the hype wears off and the long lines die down, it should make traveling between mountains a lot easier.

Anyone from the Northwest want to hook up to share a room/expenses for the opening December 12th? WB has 2 nights for the price of 3 promo going on now. I must ride in a glass bottom cabin.

Any inside scoop on how the progress is going?
