I was just reading some info from SAM magazine on how Sugarbush just installed an AC drive in their 'new' Green Mountain Express. Yes, they replaced the former Green Mountain Express, which I happened to post a few weeks ago. It was the World's fastest lift. Does anyone know what happened to the former Green Mountain Express? It seems kind of a waste to replace it since it was only 12 years old. However, the new Green Mountain Express is longer and now it only takes two lifts to reach the summit rather than 3.

I think that was a logical move. It seems a waste to have to take 3 lifts up such a short mountain; it was probably planned early on when the owners realized that the old setup was not the most efficient.

Actually, if you look more closely on the old map, that lift was actually just "The Green Mountain Quad". It was never an express lift. The world's fastest lift is actually the North Ridge Express Quad, which they just lengthened.

What's up with those bold red lines then? In the SAM article I have it says the name of the lift was called the Green Mountain Express. Maybe they goofed and it's actual name was the Super Brovo Express then?

I believe what happened was this... the original Green Mountain Express was installed by Poma in 1991, on the same line and same length as the current Green Mountain Express. When ASC bought Sugarbush like 5 years ago, they did a huge capitol improvements campaign, including something like 7 "new" lifts in one season. For some reason they had decided they wanted a self-contained beginner area at the base of Sugarbush North, so they moved the Green Mountain Express uphill and renamed it the Northwoods Express, and installed an FGQ that began at the base of the old Green Mountain Express and followed the same line but was only about half as long, thus the 3-lift ride to the top. When ASC sold the mountain to a local group, the new owners decided that the idea was ridiculous, and the wanted to go back to a 2-lift ride to the top, especially because during the early season, they could open terrain off the upper quad, and use a lift that ran the full line of the former Green Mountain Express for uploading and downloading. Thus, they installed a new Leitner-Poma HSQ on the old Green Mountain Express line, removing the FGQ that was there. Hope that wasn't too confusing.

That is exactly what happened. The Doppelmayr fixed grip quad that was removed was sold to Jay Peak and installed last season. So Sb North now has two express quads.

Wow...I guess that dumb move is part of the reason why ASC is in financial hot water right now.
