I ski at Sugarbush and for the second time in as many months they reprt that the heaven's gate triple is down for "regularly scheduled maintence." As an ex-lifty I never remember the resort I worked at closing a lift for a day in the middle of the season for maintence unles it was emergency. Last month when it was closed it was closed for several days. Before that I had rode it and there was a nasty flat spot on the first sheave on one of the upper towers. It seems to me that it would be an overnight job to change a sheave not a few days and now to be closed again??? Any thoughts?

We use the same line! I guess to the powers that be it sounds better than "we had to shut the lift down today, as the gearbox blew up." I bet that one sheave had nothing to do with it being closed for the day(s) unless they had to probe for their work chair & dig it out.

I use a similar ploy. Switches that activate "dubious bypasses" are always labeled: "TEST".

The "nasty flat spot" was due to ice and the sheave was changed in about 15 minutes. The scheduled maintenance was exactly that, scheduled. It had nothing to do with the sheave or anything else that arose unexpectedly. There was an issue that we were monitoring until new parts arrived. When the parts came in, we scheduled a day to close the lift and make the repairs. Sorry, but there's no conspiracy or catastophy that we were trying to cover up. Ski lifts are huge machines. Occasionally they require repairs that take some time. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's nice if we're able to schedule it in advance so that our guests can plan accordingly.

I could feel your pain, lift mistress. I had a kissling gear box blow up on my dopp. fixed grip triple two days before the keystone state games. Try telling mgt. that thier main lift for the competitions would take two weeks to get the parts.
