Skiers 'in pretty good shape' after night outside

A husband and wife spent a night huddled against a rock after skiing outside the boundaries of Powder Mountain resort in Eden, the resort's snow safety director said.

Following some tracks, the pair skied out of the eastern side of the resort at about 2 p.m. Monday, said Roger Arave. They continued down a canyon in the La Plata area, ending up about three to five miles outside the resort boundaries. Though they passed boundary several signs, foggy conditions made visibility poor, Arave said.

The pair decided to find a protected place to spend the night, Arave said.

The next day, they tried to reach the resort again on their own. About 3 p.m. they were found by a group of snowmobilers from the nearby Monte Cristo recreation area. Though they were without matches or a cell phone, the pair made it through the experience unscathed, Arave said.

"They seemed to be in pretty good shape for the ordeal they had been through," he said.

It reminds one of the story from Big Sky several years ago when two ladies spent the night on a chair lift.......

Crews find lost snowboarder
January 22nd, 2009 @ 6:55am
(KSL News) A snowboarder is out of the cold and unharmed this morning after being lost for several hours at Powder Mountain Ski Resort.

Crews worked through the night to find the woman after she was separated from her group yesterday afternoon around 1:30.

Brandon Toll of the Weber County Sheriff's Office explained, "She was a little bit behind them as they were going down the Hidden Lakes runs, and that's the last time they saw her."

Officials say the woman got lost when she started following skiers' tracks outside resort boundaries.

Crews went out in full force to search for her on snowmobiles, skis and snowshoes, as well as by air.

The woman says when she saw the search helicopter last night, she began following it and intersected with searchers on snowmobilers around 3 a.m.

Despite spending hours in the cold, the woman is doing fine. "She's really tired but she's in good health and safe," Toll said.

Officials say the woman is from Sweden and visiting friends in Montana.

Missing Snowboarder Found Safe

A young woman who disappeared while snowboarding at a Utah ski resort was found early Thursday morning after spending a cold, dark night lost in the mountains.

The 25-year-old woman from Sweden was last seen around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon snowboarding down a run at Powder Mountain ski resort. She was with four friends when she became separated from the group.

“She was a little bit behind them, they continued down to the bottom of the Hidden Lake lift, waited about 10 minutes, she didn't show up, so they got on the lift and decided to make a couple more runs in the same area they last saw her and didn't find her,” said Weber County Sheriff Sgt. Brandon Toll.

Search teams and a helicopter scanned the mountain throughout the night. Search teams found her around 3 a.m. Thursday morning heading back to the resort just east of Cobabe Canyon.

Medical personnel looked over the woman and found no injuries. They say hiking throughout the night kept her warm.
