Killintgon, VT posted this on Twitter the other day: "Factoid, since we opened in October there has been only 1 week that it has not rained!' Not a great time to be in New England.

Winter never really happened this year in New England. Temperatures have been consistently 15 degrees above average in Boston, and probably similar elsewhere. But they're used to it up there

Vail's got all of their high speed quads open. Just be prepared to deal with rocks on some Sun Down and Sun Up Bowl runs, and with rocks on In the Wuides. That one is nasty with moguls.

Crested Butte has got all of the terrain off the main chairlifts opened, and has gotten the High lift open. They have only been unable to open the North Face lift and terrain.

Almost all runs open off lift #4 at Loveland so I am assuming we can unload at the top now, I'll find out for sure tomorrow. Lift 9 remains closed. Copper has all lifts running, most terrain is open, Still waiting on Eagle Wind to open at Mary Jane, otherwise most terrain is open with the exception of the cirque and chutes. I almost did not renew my Copper pass this year. That would have been a huge mistake!

New England continues to be dismal. Freeze-thaw-freeze-thaw and no new snow in many weeks. Coverage is still good though thanks to the snowmaking.

I'm glad you did....

The kids and I hit Reso yesterday, and while Highline is pretty patchy (one might say crappy) near the bottom, the other three runs aren't too shabby.

15" in three days, although it came with wind so the ridgetops are back to their usual grasssy selves. Steamboat is reporting some insane amount, I heard 40" in four days. Off-duty employees are lining up for vouchers.

Heavy storm and blizzard snow yesterday (5 inches here, 10-16 inches up the mountain) and today (4 inches here). Brighton had to closed skiing night last night due wind and blizzard. Today Little Cottonwood Canyon is closed until tomorrow morning.

That is good sign to have more snow up the mountain.

The biggest dump of the year....a whooping 16" of the most dense snow I can recall. We are now on day 2 of no power at the ski hill/resort area. Guess we are not a priority when so many are without power. Nothing worse than turnng away people with all this fresh snow even if it was almost too heavy to ski.

I only wish we had that here in the East right now! We're not sure that we'll make it through this week let alone our adjusted closing date of April 1st. There's a weeks worth of 70s ahead of us and this last week was nothing but 50s and 60s. Our head of grooming recently just posted on FB: "Well the fat lady hasn't sung yet, but she's certainly going to be doing a full fledged dress rehearsal tonight!"
Chairlift n. A transportation system found at most ski areas in which a series of chairs suspended from a cable rapidly conveys anywhere from one to eight skiers from the front of one line to the back of another.

Landslide causes evacuation in The Blue Mountains

By Tracey Richardson

Updated 3 days ago

Homes were evacuated and two roads closed after a large landslide carved out a hunk of land at the Alpine Ski Club near Craigleith Ontario.
The slide happened just after 8 p.m. Wednesday night and was called in by ski club employees, according to Blue Mountains deputy fire chief A.J. Lake. A couple of homes were temporarily evacuated Wednesday night. Late Thursday afternoon, at least half a dozen homes were evacuated and roads closed again after police said the landslide was "on the move again."
Muddy water was running onto Arrowhead Road late Thursday and police went door-to-door to evacuate people. Police again closed Arrowhead Crescent and Arrowhead Road.
Described as 55 to 60 feet across, the Wednesday night landslide knocked down all the trees in its path. Although a couple of homes on Arrowhead Crescent were evacuated, the slide stopped just short of their properties, Lake said. All the damage was confined to the ski club, he said.
Residents were allowed back in after a few hours. Hydro and gas crews stood by, preparing to shut off utilities. Arrowhead Road and Arrowhead Crescent were both blocked off for several hours Wednesday night.
OPP Const. Martin Hachey said the situation continues to be monitored because of thunderstorms and rain in the forecast.
"We're hoping it doesn't get any worse because we have some rain showers in the forecast overnight," he said Thursday. "We're hoping that doesn't aggravate the situation."
Hachey said visual monitoring of the escarpment is all they can do and that "there's no way of stopping it in terms of a barrier of some kind."
Martin said landslides at ski hills in the area "are not something I've heard of happening before. We're not prone to that sort of thing around here."
In a news release Thursday, the Alpine Ski Club said it's still open. On its website, the private club just south of Craigleith listed several trails and four out of five lifts as remaining open.
Lake said engineers have been checking the stability of the hill. Township officials wouldn't comment and the ski club would only confirm the landslide and that the club remains open. Blue Mountains emergency management co-ordinator Steve Conn is regularly checking on the situation, according to Lake.
When asked to describe the landslide, Lake said, "it just looks like a big pile of mud and sticks rolling down the hill."
Hachey said it "took out all the trees and any kind of brush and twigs and whatnot. Everything's out of the way."
Recent mild weather is responsible for the slide, Lake said. Runoff from the snow on the ski trails has loosened the mud on top of bedrock, which caused the slide, he said.

I had a brief discussion with a Neighboring Lift Inspector yesterday, and he had this observation to make about our winter here in the Northeast.

He remembered going ice fishing on his birthday in March 1970, the year he graduated from high school. There was 18" of ice at the time. He went back to the same location this year on his birthday, and fished from a boat.
