Could be many things. Were there lots of people falling on the ramp? Was the loud screeching noise coming from the particular chair you were sitting on, or somewhere else? I couldn't tell you with any degree of certainty what was going on, not having been there or having any more info. All I can say is if the noise was coming from your chair, then it was the chair head squeaking as it swung forwards and back.

The screeching sound,, If it was coming from the motor room it could quite possibly be the brakes??? And if it was happening quite frequently I'm sure that there were some snomos at the motor room , maybe lift maint folks dealing with one of our favorite maladys like the intermitant ground fault or open in the de-rail safety system that sets the e-brake . For 20 bucks I will consult the crystal ball and give you the exact cause.

What was the lift manufacturer? Many Hall lifts are noisy on stopping and start ups. Although this could happen on any lift, Hall lifts are more commonly loud. It was most likely the brakes or a chair scraping a guide rail at the bottom station.
