Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had heard of any rumors about if Sunshine Village Ski Resort near Banff, Alberta is proposing any new lifts or terrain. I went there the year before last and it was amazing. Goat's Eye Mountain was the best

I know they are surrounded by provincial and National Parks but Im sure they will expand again some time in the future. Anyone know if there is any good terrain off the current resort boundaries? :helpsmilie:

So if anyone knows if they are planning any new lifts and (or) terrain for the near future, please let me know.

I would say at that Sunshine is done expanding for a while. It has invested a lot in new lifts in the last few years and there doesn't appear to be any ones new needed.

Yes there is a little bit of expansion that will possibly be implemented in the near future. As stated in an article in the Edmonton Journal last winter Sunshine has some plans for the lower mountain. Likely two high speed quads that roughly parallel the gondola would be installed to provide a back up, as if the gondola shut down, and it did a few times last year, the mountain is effectively closed until the problem is fixed. What expansion would go along with the lifts i can't say, probably a few runs in the valley, offering a little more selection that just the ski-out.

I don't think there is much more room for actual expansion of terrain, except for upper Goat's Eye (noted below) as Sunshine is pretty much built out to the extent of their lease. Of course, like Edmontonguy said, there are plans afoot for a high speed lift (or two) to provide backup for the gondola. The resort also wants to built a new daylodge at the base of Goat's Eye, and with the Tories now in government they just might finally get their wish. About the only other possibility of expansion I can think of would be higher up Goat's Eye - I remember seeing sketches for an approved lift to the summit in their master plan dating back to the 1980s. Of course, Sunshine would have to step up snow capture procedures to make this happen - but they already do a really great job on Goat's Eye, which was a windy, barren rock-strewn face before the lift and snow fences went up.

Here is an older map that shows plans for 3 lifts on Goat's Eye. Obviously, plans changed a little bit.

Does anyone know what kind of lift is proposed for upper Goat's Eye? I know it can be very windy up there and a normal chairlift may not work. Is a gondola a possibility?

I thought that the wild west has been open for at least a year or two, perhaps this is another location. Silver City was added last year i believe as another drop in point to the Dive. Wild West is located on the gnarly terrain beside the goats eye express.

Is the Sunshine Meadows Area in the BC side of the resort of the Divide Chair a possiblity for new terrain or is it not steep enough? It is also in a Provincial Park I believe. :cursing:

Any thoughts?

Most of the terrain in the Sunshine meadows isn't very well suited to expansion. Mostly due to both, being too shallow in pitch and being quite undulating in places. For those familiar with the bottom terrain of lookout mountain, the undulations can make for a long ski to the Divide Chair.

Yes, I remember that it wasn't all downhill at the bottom. The terrain undulates quite a fair amount. Thanks for the info.
