Wow, Crystal looks good. What a change from last weekend. Whistler was equally good the past few days, with Glacier opening on Blackcomb and the Peak opening on Whistler. The conditions were more like midwinter than thanksgiving.
Lavalamp, did you notice that Crystal removed every one of their trail signs over the summer?

Yeah, I did notice that. The word that I've gotten is that they intended to install new ones on metal poles, but that they were either not ready when the snow arrived (earlier than anticipated), or they ordered them too late. Either way, they should have new ones - for next season

Crystal was also having problems with their electrical service this weekend, and they were running everything on aux but at reduced speed, which wasn't great because the mountain was packed. But the runs weren't too congested either.

How was the boulevard this weekend? Puget Sound Energy spilled 18,000 gallons of diesel fuel on the Northway Road a few weeks ago. Now they are spending millions on an 86 person crew cleaning 24 hours a day. As of last week, they had completely dug up the Northway Road, built a new road next to it, filled F-Lot with dorm type housing for the crews and gotten flood lights for the whole area to be lit all night. Apparently they are going to have to dig up every tree in the area and replace all the soil.

The Boulevard wasn't too bad. Mostly compact snow, bare and wet in places. They had the "Chains Required" sign up , but it wasn't really necessary on Saturday (they weren't enforcing it on that day anyway). The 10-mph construction zone speed limit is the biggest problem, and its more an inconvenience than a problem. Crystal manages to keep the Boulevard plowed and de-iced pretty well, better than WA-DOT maintains 410.

The last time I checked, PSE had recovered about 15,000 gallons of diesel with absorbent sponges and some excavation, most of it under the substation service road and the Northway road. They're now digging everything else up. I've got a couple of pictures of the F-lot "village" if anyone is interested.

Mt. Baker went over 100 inches last night. They got another foot today. It's not even December yet. :shocking:

Here's the only one I can find at the moment.

Taken a little over two weeks ago. There are now more trailers on the far side, and WA Dept. of Ecology has a trailer with a satellite uplink on that side as well instead of that RV. A full crew easily has double the number of cars you see in the lot. There is a horde of equipment back in the trees on both sides of the Boulevard digging everything up.

Fun stuff. Apparently (word has it) the transfer line from the main tank to the day tank ruptured, so the transfer pump kept going since the day tank wasn't filling and tripping the 'full' shutoff switch. No-one noticed until either a Crystal or Puget Power employee happened to drive by.

I'll pass the road kudos on to the plow crew.

Aren't those fuel systems supposed to have pressure switches, and two layers of pipe so that things like that don't happen? That's the way it goes in NH.

Jonni, don't worry, I read on the Mt. Washington Observatory page that temps are supposed to DROP 25 to 30 degrees.

Well on lift 1 the aux is down below the unloading ramp. On the way down to turn it on i slipped and my left foot caught but i kept falling. So my left knee went outward while my foot stayed in place. i heard and felt a pop in my knee then i was in pretty bad pain. ive never broken a bone but im sure the pain was comparable. well being a dedicated mechanic i sucked it up long enough to get the lift going then i called my boss. next thing you know i was in a ski patrol sled and on my way to the company doc.

the doc thinks i pinched my cartilage and pulled some tendons in my knee. so im on light duty for a couple days and i should be back to full duty saturday but i probably cant ski till next week. :cursing:

Or you tore your ACL.

When I tore my ACL, the mountain medic said I probably just pulled some muscles. Well, it was a lot worse than that.
