Terrain Park Stuff

liftmech's Photo liftmech 28 Jan 2004

Several weeks ago our park crew had these signs built to 'educate' the park riders. (Mounting them was one of my recent projects- the park crew refused to climb towers to post them.) I personally think most kids are going to use them for targets, but what do I know...
How are the parks at some other areas? I hear Tahoe and Mamoth are pretty good.

Do all the other signs say the same thing or are they different?

At Mountain High in California, they have these same type of signs all around the mountain and each sign has something humorish about snowboarding safety. I think I read about this in SAM.

The parks up here are pretty nice.

Mammoth is obviously the best, but sierra is up there, same with squaw northstar and alpine. Here is a few of squaw:

They're all different- each one has a slogan in bold, and a smaller statement below. Others are 'look before you leap', 'easy style it', and other similar. I believe they're part of a national effort along with other resorts- the programme is called 'Smart Style'.

Squaw's looks pretty good, even though terrain parks are not my cup of tea. Personally, Northstar has made a huge mistake with its parks this year; at least half of the jumps were rails and they put them way too close together. On Logger's Loop they put them three across, and right after you were past one set of three, there would be another set right below it. Thus, you would have no time to plot your course through the park. If you are going to put in a park, especially one with rails, make sure there is enough elbow room to be safe. Northstar has screwed up royal. Just look at Squaw's... plenty of visibility, plenty of room, etc....

Yea, the squaw parks sure are nice. I am going to northstar saturday, so i can see how they are. Hopefully itll snow a foot, but itll probably be more like 4 inches :(

Bachelor doesn't have any signs yet about respecting the park and yada. Well maybe one for the half pipe but I don't know.

Zack I bet you can't wait till you go to Bachelor. The Air Chamber is sick and so is the competition park. I wish they had the Pine Marten Park finished when I was there last. The main jump is hella crazy.

Zack, watch out at Northstar. I was sort of nervous just skiing around the rails.

Haha, ive learned my lesson on rails. I dont like when there isnt much visibility, but i guess i will just have to see. Usually when i go in a park for the first time i wont do any jumps or rails, i just kinda survey them so i know what to expect with runup, landings, ect. You can also see the speed needed for jumps by observing other riders.

Cameron, i sure cant wait to get up to bachelor. Right now we arent entirely sure if we are going (soccer finals), but we should know soon (if they lose one game they are out). Worst case i go to tahoe for the week which sure isnt bad at all.

u knwo. terrian parks are pissing me off. WP put terrain parks on two of my favorite runs. :( I could care less about terrian parks. But when they put them on my favorite runs i tend to bitch.

i can agree a park was insatlled on one of only two black runs at a local resort and the half pipe crowds out half of a blue run. Also @ marmot one of the several huge cruisers on the upper mountain was lost to a park.

its not lost, its just being used for something else. If there are enough riders who like the park (at least half) it will probably stay the same. If they dont like it, and no one else does, then it can be changed. The best thing you can do is fill out a comment card, or write to the resort with a proposal for a new location or another idea you have. Keep in mind they arent going to get rid of the parks becasue that is what brings people to some resorts.

PCMR and The Canyons both have their terrain parks in areas not used all that much, like the Red Hawk/Sunrise lift at The Canyons

They turned a nice green into a terrian park. This green is my warm up run. They also turned my second warm up run into a terrian park.

You have to admit WP's staff got creative when they placed their latest park. The lower end of it crosses a heavily used trail which leads back to the Park base area, so the grooming and park crews came up with the idea of a 'flyover'. The park basically runs on an overpass, while the traverse goes through a large culvert underneath. It looks pretty cool.
I have to agree about parks being placed on otherwise great runs. Ours is on Loverly, which is a great beginner/lower intermediate cruiser and used to be the most popular run on the hill. But it does bring in the cash, so I can't bitch too much. If only we had a dedicated park lift...

SO at wp they built an overpass for the park?

Yup, they built it out of large landscaping bricks and a 2,5 metre culvert. It will hold the weight of all that manmade snow, plus cats.
