Out of all the Scenic lifts in NC, my favorite is Ghost town's lift. The lift could still run, if the new owners give it a chance and upgrade it. I wonder where the old lift will go? The old lift is a 1960's Calvero-Savio Chairlift, upgraded in the 1980's with new Doppelmayr Chairs and grips, and hasn't run since 2002. I wonder who will manufacture the new lift? I would sure hate for the original Ghost Town Chairlift to be torn out. The only other way up the mountain is by Bus or the Incline.
Today, they reopened Ghost Town for the first time in over Four years! I would like to go there and see construction happening on the Rollercoasters, Incline, Chairlift, and everything else!

I went there today, and the haul rope was on the ground, there were no chairs in sight, the towers were still standing, but the bottom terminal had no roof, and the controls were destroyed. I took some pictures, and I'll post them later. I also went to Cataloochee ski area, of which the acess road goes in front of the parking lot. The haul rope was very rusty, and the counter weight went into the stone building at the base. I also included a map.

That is a very interesting lift. I wish that it was given a chance to run.

Info I've heard, is that the lift will run again soon. The terminals and all of the electrical/drive components will be replaced. The bullwheel size will be increased to allow for the possibility of increasing line gauge in the future. Also they will also be rehabin the incline tramslide thing (funicular)

Never Mind, they are Calvero-Savio, I've known it since the day after I posted it....

Anyway, they are selling the old Calvero-Savio chairs manufactured in the late 1950's and brought to Ghost Town in 1961 which now are selling for $200 a piece if anyone would like to buy one.

The only Incovenince is that you have to pick it up yourself.

It is at the end of the main drag of Maggie Valley, NC, near Cataloochee.

Really gets me angry to see a lift in shambles like that.

:crying: Me too. It's like letting a classic car sit in the yard and rust. Nothing wrong with an old lift. Some people don't need fancy new stuff. Hell, I'm still driving the same car I got when I finished high school in 1988. 212,800 miles and still running strong!

Well the good news is that the chair lift IS running but the tram is not. Hopefully it'll open next year as will the coaster. I don't think they'd eliminate the tram for those who may have trouble getting on/off the lift or like me, afraid of heights.
