Marketing praises Lift Maintenance Department

Shasta Ski area Marketing Director Gene Landsmann praises Lift Maintenance and Snow Removal Departments.
Landsmann gets my Marketing Director of the year award.
Perhaps Mr. Landsmann came from a lift background.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” wrote Charles Dickens in A Tale of Two Cities.

The phrase aptly describes the 2005-2006 20th anniversary ski season at the Mount Shasta Board and Ski Park that saw record attendance and incredible late season snow marred by the death of Park employee Javier Salas in a snowboarding accident and long time Mount Shasta Ski Team coach Paul Gianera killed in a skiing accident in Utah.

Park marketing director Gene Landsmann said that despite barely getting open because of a lack of snow early in the season, Park attendance in the latter part of the season surpassed previous records as storms kept the snow falling right up to closing day.

“The resort opened on December 19th with only partial operation. After New Year's winter truly arrived at the resort and made for an unforgettable powder snow season,” Landsmann said. “Despite the extreme winter weather the ski park registered an all time visitation record for the period January 1st to the end of the season. During this season's operation 435 inches of snow fell on the resort which compares to 164 inches during the 04-05 season.”

Landsmann said during this season's 119 days and 44 nights of operation the ski area attracted over 164,000 skier visits. These statistics compare to 154,000 visits on 121 operating days and 68 nights during the 2003/04 season.”

Landsmann said the deaths of Salas and Gianera will be felt for many years.

“On the tragic side, the death of Javier Casapia Sales, an employee of the resort, was the first activity related loss of life in the resort's history,” Landsmann said. “Paul was my skiing buddy. I will be skiing for him for the rest of my life.”

Landsmann said there were also many rewarding moments for the two owners Andy Aguilera and Chuck Young

“The extensive maintenance on the entire lift system during the previous summer paid off handily as lift related problems were almost non-existent,” Landsmann said. “This was the first season the ski resort provided it's own snow removal from the access road. Despite the record snowfall, the challenged crew never tired in the cutting of the huge snow banks along the ski park access road and in keeping the road surface in good shape.”

General Manager Chuck Young said he was impressed with the dedication of this season's staff.

“Even the continued snowfall failed to dampen the staff's spirit,” Young said.

The ski park is already preparing for the 2007 ski season and is scheduled to start its annual season pass sale on Wednesday, July 5th 2006.

One of Shasta's lift mechanics (Shastacruse) lurks here sometime- strong work! About time someone from marketing remembers we exist...
