This hill is on the edge of Minniapolis/St. Paul, so there is a rather considerable population base to support all of those lifts. Many hills near cities especially in the middle of the praries will have high lift capacity/acre ratios when compared with mountain resorts. One lift per run is pretty high i admit, though i guess it makes it easier for running laps, especially when the hill has a rather flat upper topography that stretches for quite some length, a lot of traversing is often neccessary.

ALL of the lifts are old and slow and crappy- hall doubles, triples, and one quad. The area is fairly small and the trail map doesn't accurately portray the ski area. This place is one that I cannot stand... I have races there every yeasr and I want to redesign it. For more info go to firsttracksonline.com and look at resorts and experiences for MN.

Hi there! New member here.
I have been to Afton Alps a few times, but usually I head to other spots in the region. Afton Alps is north of Hastings, and south of Afton, Minnesota, near the St. Croix River, which separates Minnesota from Wisconsin.
Afton is the largest ski area in the Twin Cities area, though of course we're talking Midwest conditions (~250 acres; ~350 vertical). So "Alps" reflects the use of the marketing license.
As for the lifts, they do need a lot of them; I don't have traffic numbers with me, but I've felt more crowded at Afton than anywhere else in the area.
