I always wondered what happens to ski lifts if they are struck by lightning? Do they get damaged or does nothing happen? Please, I would like to know.

Depending upon where the strike hits the lift, the following could happen:
-nothing
-control issues related to high-voltage spikes
-bullwheel and/or sheave bearing damage (from the current running through them to ground)
-bullwheel and/or sheave liner damage (same as above)
-haul rope damage
-elecric drive and/or motor damage
-tower (derail) switch damage

In the summer of '96, we experienced a lightning storm at Crystal. I didn't see the exciting stuff as I was at the bottom of Midway, but the top operator of Rex saw ball lightning hit near tower 18 and roll into the terminal, where it detonated. The only damage was minor paint burns on the top terminal. I've also seen holes in sheave liners where the current went from the haul rope through the liner and bearing to the tower, which was grounded. We lose several CPSs a summer on Super B as well, all to lightning.

Here's an older topic i remebered we had kicking around on the Forum. Telluride has lightning sheilds on most of the towers on the Gondola. Also a few examples of other lifts getting hit by lightning. Here's the link.
