Newer Yan FG lifts

Why do some newer Yan FG lifts like the one shown have or appear to have Doppelmayr sheaves? It looks like lift has a Dopp. 4t/4d assembely.

Because the aluminum sheave assemblies like the one in the picture below were prone to cracking. This was the kind used on Elkhead at Steamboat most likely.

A lot of the Yan aluminum sheave assemblies were replaced with the Doppelmayr shaeve assemblies. We have do this on a couple of lift at Mammoth. The older Yan steel sheave assemblies are still in use on hundreds of double and triple fixed grip lifts around the country.
I don't understand it
I've cut it twice and it is still too short

sorry, this is a little off- topic, but MMSA, where is that lift from your icon that is derailed?

I see. I do know that lift 2 at loveland has those sheaves. Also I remember around 8 years ago tower 11 (or something like that) on Mountain Chief at Copper had a regular Yan depression assembely, but now it has a Dopp. 4t/4d. If I rememder correctly, Rendezvous at Copper has Dopp assembelies, but the hold down assembely is still Yan.

T9 on Mountain Chief did have a Yan steel assembly, but it was too worn out to rebuild so when the time came it was replaced with a Doppelmayr setup. R and S both have Doppelmayr line machinery; we had one good set of hold-down sheaves for R's tower 1 but nothing for S so it got Doppelmayr.

The YAN aluminum assemblies certainly are distinctive, but from what I hear I'm glad we don't have any anymore.

Did Yan go back to the steel assemblies after using the black ones for a few years? DV had 3 lifts with aluminum assemblies and those cool looking black sheaves, and in two days only one will be left (Mayflower). What years were the black sheaves used? I think they started in 1982

Notice in this picutre how the sheaves are mounted on the catwalks in sets of 4, not 8,

It seems like almost all of the newer style aluminum sheaves are dissapearing from the yan lifts. I know 2 summers ago kirkwood replaced chair 10's with doppelmayr sheave assemblies and chair 11 had poma assemblies installed a few years earlier.

I was wondering, on most lifts with the retrofitted sheaves, those at the upper and lower terminals usually are not replaced. Chairs 5 and 10 are like this and I am sure many more are the same. Is there a reason not all are replaced at the same time?

Unless they were just replaced recently, Silver Queen has them everywhere.

Viking at DV has them in the upper and lower terminal - it looks like Silver Queen at Silver Star - but not on the line too

Sometimes the terminal sheaves cannot be replaced because they are bigger than the line sheaves. As for the sheaves being mounted in sets of four rather than eight- they're not, the catwalk is the eight-rocker. Take a look next time you ride one of those lifts. Another YAN innovation that for some reason never caught on elsewhere.

Those terminal sheave hubs are actually the old hub design from cadillaic cars back in the day!

You guys must have fun changing those- I prefer to have the single axle found on older YANs and every other manufacturer.

Yeah they take a little bit longer than single axle to change out, but they seem to be a pretty good sheave. :thumbsup:

Well that would suck if you had to work on it while it was moving. You'd have to be quite a good surfer. :unsure:

The catwalk doesn't move, it's welded onto the crossarm at whatever angle it needs to be. That wouldn't be too fun for mechanics
