Here's a picture of what the chairlift on Ruud Mountain looked like back in the day.

There are a lot of great old photos of Sun Valley in the book 'Sun Valley Ski Guide,' which I checked out at my school's library.

That lift is not the original one.
That's an interesting article about this lift. What's the source anyway? I like the part about boyne mountain's magical growth, and I have to admit 402 is closer to reality than the currently claimed 500.

From what I know, the original lift is in fact at Boyne as skiersage says. Only the top and bottom terminal steel structure is original. When first installed at Boyne it did in fact have the wooden towers, single chair and steel on steel sheaves. Now modified with steel tublar towers and riblet equipment. The lift still has the original Babbit brass bearing on the lower bullwheel. Not really a bearing, its a brass sleeve that the bullwheel shaft rides in. Needs to be greased daily. Boyne is also notiable for the first Triple (sister hill Boyne Highlands), First quad (Meadows at Boyne MT) to be replaced in the next couple years, and the USA first HS 6 pack.

In re Sun Valley lifts:
Proctor Mountain and Ruud Mountain are two separate mountains. The first two single chairs were built in 1936 on Dollar Mountain and Proctor Mountain. Another single chair was built on Ruud Mountain in 1937. Ruud was the jumping hill with 20m and 40m jumps. The chair also served skiers.
As to which lift is in the original picture, I don't know, but: the Ruud chair started by the hiway (road). whereas the Proctor chair was up a canyon. Ruud was closer to Dollar Mtn.
Instant trivia: For whom were Proctor and Ruud Mountains named?
cheers, TCS

So I think the lift pictured, the one that I also visited is the ski jump one on Ruud Mountain.

I'm a little surprised that no one commented on the title of this thread. Sun Valley had the first chairlift in the world, but certainly not the first "ski lift". There were rope tows, J-bars, and T-bars by 1936.
Oh for crying out loud! OK, hows this.
"Old ski lift (chair lift)in Sun Valley Idaho that was built in 1936, that has been referred to as the first ski lift in the world, but may not be so I guess its the oldest standing ski lift in the world instead".

But wait, there's this still standing original Constam T-bar in Davos.... (just kidding!)
