I would have to say that the steepest lift I have ever been on was a dopp t-bar at Zermatt.  I cant recal the name but noticed when I was there that they were building a tram over the same area.  The Gant-Hohtälli tram has now replaced this t-bar.  The incline of the line was so steep there were places where I was being lifted verticaly.  Kinda scary experience.  One of the highest places off the ground for a HSQ in the US has to be at the very top of Vail's Riva Bahn  the gulley under the lift really sneaks up on you especially if you dont have the bar lowered.

I wonder if Brad can ski vail and ride that lift and get a few pics of this... I have never been on that lift. While i have skied @ Vail.

Chair 23 at mammoth is really steep. It has a stretch before the unloading that is very close if not 45 degrees, for sure when the lift is running full capicity.

Hey Craig, welcome to the forum. My name is Cameron and I'm one of the two forum adminstrators of thist site. Bill is the other and he's the founder and owner of it. We also have a few site moderators, which most of them work in the ski industry and maybe you know a few like James at Deer Valley. Anyway, I'm just finishing up my winter ski trip which I have been on about 2 weeks.

I contacted you guys at Outback a while back asking about some stuff, but I never heard back. Anyway, I see that you have found the site and if you have anything you would like the share or submit to the site, feel free to send it to us at submit@skilifts.org or post it on the forum. I'm not sure if you have seen the Outback Construction page on this site, but if you have anything you would like to add to it, such as pictures and/or content, you send that to us. http://skilifts.org/...onstruction.htm

P.S. I'm just curious but how did you find out about this site?

Hi Cameron,
Thanks for the welcome to Skilifts.org!
Believe it or not.. I was surfing for a used rope to replace a cable in Costa Rica on one of the trams we maintain and poof! the website popped out at me. How long has the site been up? I really appreciate the kudos you guys gave Outback on the installations page. With the start of this new year I would like to become involved with this website and discuss topics with people that understand. My wife is over it! No longer allowed to even mention "skilifts" at the dinner table!
Just kidding...too much scotch.

haha, I think most of the people on this forum have that same problem with people thinking that we're weird for liking aerial lifts. A lot of my friends make fun of me for having a fascination with them.

This site recently just turned 1, but before Skilifts.org was NW-Skilifts.com, which was founded in 2002 if I can remember correctly. We eventually out grew the NW-Skilifts.com name and changed it to Skilifts.org last year and also added other sections of the site that people like you would find useful down the road, like the technical section. It still needs a lot of work, but once it's finished, it will be one of a kind. We are trying to make Skilifts.org a community where people can trade stories and information about things in the aerial lift industry. I guess you could say that this site will be like attending an aerial lift convention like the RMLA, but instead being Internet based.

Not to Mention the numerous crashes that occured with NW-Skilifts right back to the old micrsoft hosting. I forget the name of the system it used.

Hi there! This is my first posting here, so maybe I didn't tell you something new. I come from Switzerland, and we have some steep ropeways to there.

We start with the Gelmerbahn near Interlaken. Its a funicular with only one car. Built 1927 for the construction of a power plant dam. Since four years now open for public use. The maximum gradient is 106%. More Infos here.

Next candidate is the transportation aerial tramway of Mürren, also in Bernese Oberland. The village Mürren can only be reached by ropeways. There are two possibilities: A funicular followed by a narrow gauge train, and a aerial tramway. Often the freight transports (remember: all goods have to carried up with the ropeways!) get in conflict with the waiting passengers. So they built a tram only for freights. The public tramway has two sections who looks like a V. But the freight tram takes the direct way! Straight down over a rocky wall, a tower stand just at the edge of it! At this point, the gondola is about 400 m (more than 1000 feet) over ground! Sounds great, doesn't it? But it comes even better: Also there is the maximum gradient of 162%! Unfortunately, the tram is not open for the public. But there is an exception. During the man overhaul of the public tramway in spring and autumn, the freight tram will also transport people. A very unique and impressive ride!

Well, not so many.

^^This picture was taken from the "normal" cable car. If you look closely you can see the cables of the transport tram left from the cables of the regular one.

^^Somewhere on the upper right, but not to be seen at this pic, is the first tower. Need to say more?
