So we are attempting to build a model chairlift for our high school physics class. Does anyone know of any sources of information that could explain the basic mechanichs/ physics of a chairlift?

Physics are a little beyond what this site discusses, but I can give you a background on the mechanical aspects of a lift. In simple form, you have a drive which turns a motor which turns a shaft with turns gears inside a gearbox which turns another shaft which turns a bullwheel which drives a rope around in circles. The whole contraption is watched over by an electronic safety system which monitors various aspects of the lift like speed and rope position. There is a braking system to keep the lift from running away and/or backwards. Finally, the carriers are attached to the rope by some sort of clamp.
