Just found this site and perfect timing for my question. I work for a local resort and will be participating in a ski area clinic next week. Part of the topics we will review is the general safety design and features of chair lifts. I understand the anti-roll back braking system, but I am still uncertain about the difference between the primary and emergency braking devices.

I understand the primary is for decreasing the speed and general stops with the lift. I am not sure if this is just a brake device or also tied in with the power supply of the lift. I believe the emergency brake is located on the bullwheel and looks like a drum.

Just so everyone knows who reads this post, my job doesn't include running the lifts or any lift maintenance. I thought I should make that clear just to eliminate any concern...

Chair lift safety is just one of several resort related topic the clinic will focus on. My duties at the area do not involve the chair lift, so I have limited exposure to their design. This site is a great resource.

A good source is to try search with those terms you describe - most have been talked about at length.
