Wow. That is an amazing, and terribly sad story. It is even terribly ironic that two safety devices were involved. That is more than enough evidence that jumping is the worst possible idea. This incident was several years ago, correct?

Well they have signs for lift towers. I think Breckenridge has signs that say, "Do not jump from lifts. In case of emergency ski patrol will evacuate." I have seen them elsewhere too.
My jumping story: Although I don't know anyone who has jumped off of a lift, I have watched them do it. At Vail a year or two ago, I was riding lift 14 heading to the backside when a snowboarder fell at the top. She broke her wrist and the ski patrol was called. The lift was stopped for 20 minutes and the guys who were 1 chair from the unload ramp started jumping off. The operator didn't notice because he was helping ski patrol. After the guys jumped, the whole lift bounced a lot.

I hate to stereotype, but many kids don't think. A lot of kids/teens, like myself, would never jump from a lift. Some, however, would.

Correct... srry for the miss print i was a bit fired up... I left that MT. in 02 we put in a new fixed and the area where ppl were jumping from now stand's "tower head" 47 ft ... Sign's would help in a real break down situation but I would like to think you would see a patroler in atleast 20 or 30 minute's of sitten there, as mechanic's it's hard to say evac time but trust me were countin the minute's... and in the case of why anyone would jump... Why not if the possablity poses itself... You see it all the time when dealin with the public... Check any website you tube, break it's mostly ppl doing stuipd stuff and getting hurt tryin... I've definatly done some stuipd stuff in my hayday but we didnt have video cam's tape'n it... TG...

And so signs are going to prevent you from jumping ,HOW?
Yes even though there are signs posted on lift towers, your still going to have some wise azz jump off. The only true way to stop this, is to close the lift. Also all it takes is one time for them to get hurt or a friend , famliy memebr to get hurt, they will never do it again, as well as never think about doing it again
And now that i no longer work in the industry, if i'm out skiing and i witness some jerk jumping off a lift, after i'm done screaming at tthem for thier stupidity, i will call patrol and report them, i will follow them down to the the maze and report them to the lifites. It doesn't matter where im at. Heavenly, Sierria At Tahoe, DV, Vail, joe blow mole hill,va, ant hill minn.
The have no right to indanger others, so that they won't have to sit there, while the lift is stopped for
A. Someone got hurt on the ramp(s) B. Maybe the lift deteched a problem and shut itself down. Resort management is NOT GOING TO FORGET ABOUT YOU HANGING UP THERE.
So if you jump off a lift, and you get hurt. So be it. You got what your deserved. Next time use that so called brain, God gave you, and rethink before you jump off a chairlift.

13 year old fallS off lift.
So ok, my home town has slow news days. Pretty sad when they have to revert to the patrol log at a local ski area, to come up with headlines.
I've riddin this same lift a few times, as the story states it's 40 years old, but is still safe and reliable.

Also saw 4 last week after it snowed who probably didn't get caught.
Amazingly none of these 6 idiots got hurt.

While you should not jump off a broken lift, the resort should not operate a lift the has a known problem which causes lengthy and repeated delays. It seems irresponsible to me, and would just encourage bad behavior by the riders.
