We had a kid fall out of the Flyer a few weeks ago (bruised ribs, and he said it was his fault because he was screwing around and not sitting straight) and his father jumped out several towers later. He claimed he wasn't thinking straight since his son had just fallen out. Once patrol had finished bundling his son into the rig for the trip down, they politely told the guy a) jumping from the lift can derail it and b) what if he had injured himself? He could have broken one or both legs and quite possibly other bones as well. Kind of hard to go help your kid if you yourself need help.

If i catch anyone jumping off a lift that's it there done. PERIOD... Season pass holder or not and i will argue it... And i,ve got the point that will get you kicked off the MT. indefentaly... A derail is no fun in the middle of the winter and yes jumping a lift can do that but my point is DEATH.... There is no coming back next week when your 6 ft under... You might not be the one that die's but it could your friend, girlfriend, brother, sister, the kid's in the chair behind you that saw you jump and thought it's the coolest thing they have ever seen... Five year's ago i was working at this MT. and i was working that night... I was not at the top but my good friend was the first on the scene... It was by far the worst night i've ever had in the bis.... If you ask me they went to light on you because your still weighing the fact's... you we're wrong ... I dont care if your stuck in a chair for an hour KEEP YOUR ASS IN THAT CHAIR... Try giving cpr to a dead 14 yr old girl.... http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/...nixAnalysis.pdf

Wow. That is an amazing, and terribly sad story. It is even terribly ironic that two safety devices were involved. That is more than enough evidence that jumping is the worst possible idea. This incident was several years ago, correct?

I have to agree with WBSKI, towertop is being a bit steriotypical but i do agree that jumping is wrong and there should be real consequences for it. As for myself, i am not crazy enough to attempt jumping; i'd rather be crazy ON the hill. Ive seen jumping a few times at my local hill but there is no real point to it considering the unloading ramp is another 50 feet upline. :censored2: What a bunch of dumbasses. I might be a crazy skier, but im definately not a stupid skier.

Prayin' for snow

There should be something at the bottom of the mtn or on lift towers and if people dont follow that, they should not be allowed on the mountain for at least a year because the potential damage to the resort is much greater than the amount they are going to bring into the resort.

Well they have signs for lift towers. I think Breckenridge has signs that say, "Do not jump from lifts. In case of emergency ski patrol will evacuate." I have seen them elsewhere too.

My jumping story: Although I don't know anyone who has jumped off of a lift, I have watched them do it. At Vail a year or two ago, I was riding lift 14 heading to the backside when a snowboarder fell at the top. She broke her wrist and the ski patrol was called. The lift was stopped for 20 minutes and the guys who were 1 chair from the unload ramp started jumping off. The operator didn't notice because he was helping ski patrol. After the guys jumped, the whole lift bounced a lot. :shocking: They were only 5 feet off the ground, so I cannot imagine someone 20-30 feet off the ground. I see why that might de-rope a lift.

Resorts in Ontario have those signs too and im pretty sure u get your pass revoked if u jump off a lift. Im not sure about if there is any more punishment though in Ontario.

I hate to stereotype, but many kids don't think. A lot of kids/teens, like myself, would never jump from a lift. Some, however, would. :cursing:

Correct... srry for the miss print i was a bit fired up... I left that MT. in 02 we put in a new fixed and the area where ppl were jumping from now stand's "tower head" 47 ft ... Sign's would help in a real break down situation but I would like to think you would see a patroler in atleast 20 or 30 minute's of sitten there, as mechanic's it's hard to say evac time but trust me were countin the minute's... and in the case of why anyone would jump... Why not if the possablity poses itself... You see it all the time when dealin with the public... Check any website you tube, break it's mostly ppl doing stuipd stuff and getting hurt tryin... I've definatly done some stuipd stuff in my hayday but we didnt have video cam's tape'n it... TG...
They say a monkey can turn a wrench... I hope it's an adjustable....

If you get banned for the season, how do they make sure you don't come back?

Well they have signs for lift towers. I think Breckenridge has signs that say, "Do not jump from lifts. In case of emergency ski patrol will evacuate." I have seen them elsewhere too.

And so signs are going to prevent you from jumping ,HOW?
Yes even though there are signs posted on lift towers, your still going to have some wise azz jump off. The only true way to stop this, is to close the lift. Also all it takes is one time for them to get hurt or a friend , famliy memebr to get hurt, they will never do it again, as well as never think about doing it again
And now that i no longer work in the industry, if i'm out skiing and i witness some jerk jumping off a lift, after i'm done screaming at tthem for thier stupidity, i will call patrol and report them, i will follow them down to the the maze and report them to the lifites. It doesn't matter where im at. Heavenly, Sierria At Tahoe, DV, Vail, joe blow mole hill,va, ant hill minn.
The have no right to indanger others, so that they won't have to sit there, while the lift is stopped for
A. Someone got hurt on the ramp(s) B. Maybe the lift deteched a problem and shut itself down. Resort management is NOT GOING TO FORGET ABOUT YOU HANGING UP THERE.

So if you jump off a lift, and you get hurt. So be it. You got what your deserved. Next time use that so called brain, God gave you, and rethink before you jump off a chairlift. :censored2: :censored2: :censored2: :cursing: :cursing: :cursing: :cursing:

13 year old fallS off lift.
So ok, my home town has slow news days. Pretty sad when they have to revert to the patrol log at a local ski area, to come up with headlines.
I've riddin this same lift a few times, as the story states it's 40 years old, but is still safe and reliable.

I saw 2 jumpers today and gave the lift ops a description, and they got their tickets pulled by patrol like they deserved. Patrol can't seem to do anything when it is a day skier except cut that ticket.

Also saw 4 last week after it snowed who probably didn't get caught.

Amazingly none of these 6 idiots got hurt.

Two years ago, top of Snake Creek Express at Brighton, two men (they were strangers) and I sat the same chair, we were almost getting on at the top when the lift stopped. We waited about 10 minutes (there was problem at the bottom). Two men tried to jump off and climb up on the ramp. The lift supervisor came out of the station, and he yelled at these men to stay, he said if they jump off, they will slip off the ramp, fell deep slope (about 30 feet) and they will get fined and reboke ski tickets. I stared at them, and in my mind "Wow". The men obeyed and stayed the chair.

I agree with everyone concerning the dangers of jumping off the lift, and that one should never jump off a lift. What bothers me about this incident though is the claim that the lift motor was overheating. Assuming this information is correct, I would think the resort would shut the lift down to the general public until the overheating shutdowns are fixed.

While you should not jump off a broken lift, the resort should not operate a lift the has a known problem which causes lengthy and repeated delays. It seems irresponsible to me, and would just encourage bad behavior by the riders.
