• Interests:yo, my name is Christian, and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (Berkeley ....sort of) skiing is what I do best, and I love the mountains. Of course I love skilifts too, which is why I'm here. I'd like to learn more about them and maybe work in the Ski industry later on in life.

Let it snow.

I did a search for hesperus, and there's a couple of threads about the area and the new lift.

As far as I am aware they will be open next season. Check on their website Ski Hesperus for the most current info. Hesperus has not installed a new chair since 1988 when they installed their first. They do however have the old Aspen Highlands beginner lift on the ground ready to install when they have the funds. I believe that their chair was originaly the Black lift from Bachelor. Its a good mountain to ski especially if it starts dumping in the afternoon since they have night skiing. They are at a low elevation so the snow can be variable though. Which time are you refering to them being closed? They have had a few times where they were closed for a season or more.

Theres a place for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed potatoes.

"You could say that a mountain is alot like a woman, once you think you know every inch of her and you're about to dip your skis into some soft, deep powder...Bam, you've got two broken legs, cracked ribs and you pay your $20 just to let her punch your lift ticket all over again"

Jim Pitcher, owner of Hesperus Ski Area, does some pre-season maintenance as he stands on the ski lift on Monday. Pitcher is oiling the haul rope.

It is good to see Jim out there doing some work. When I talked to him last year at the end of the season, he was really burnt out. He said he "will" sell it over the summer, 'cause he was ready to move on.

He had a buyer in 2003 and it sounded pretty good, but then the guy disappeared...

The area is fun when they have good snow. As poloxskier knows the terrain can be pretty fun! You can actually get more vertical in a day at Hesperus than at Durango Mountain Resort.

Jim does very little grooming. Only down below. 75% of his skiers are beginners and stay down below. I was there two years ago and was finding 24" of untracked all day long.

For only $400k it can be yours, the only problem is, the property does not come with it.

I believe you have to be so many feet off the ground before you have to wear a harness.

Our guys have to have a harness on if they work 8ft above the ground. Could be different in that state.

From my posts last March:

The lift on the ground is from Aspen Highlands he does not know what it was called. But HE removed it from Aspen Highlands himself. The riblet on the ground only has 3 towers with it, so that might help with your search.

I forgot to mention that the Riblet on the ground was estimated to cost $100k to install. $50k for engineering and $50k for concrete and install. This estimate is by the current owner.

I don't think he has any plans to install it, he will let the new owners worry about it.

He has mentioned in the past that if someone wanted to buy into the area, he would get a groomer and install the second lift. He has also mentioned building a better base lodge.
