The primary function would be for training with our gondola evac gear. Currently our training for the gondola includes 2 days pre season, but after travel time to get there by road, and other logistical problems the actual time on the line per person is minimal. For anyone new to the system it's hard for them to get up to speed in those two days and difficult to give them any one on one training as it ties up more than 20 patrollers and a few lift maint staff. With the location of the gondola and lift closing times it's also been nearly impossible to get any ongoing training time during the winter.
Our evac ability has been up to standards, but I think that we could do it better, faster, and be more proficient at it.
The site will give us more time with the rookies to learn the system and allow our H2B patrollers to get up to speed; they almost always arrive late due to Visa delays. It will also allow ongoing training through out the winter, thanks to its central location. We will only need a minimum of two people to use it and they can still respond to patrol calls.
Secondary uses will be for LadSaf training, and fallen climber rescue training.
Here is the plan at the moment. String approx 120ft of extra haul rope (from sultan I think) across a drainage pond (it only has water in it for a few weeks in spring when we don't need it.) Near the higher side of the bank, place a tower (old sultan tower). The haul rope would go from ground to ground, and thanks to the topography we will be able to access the rope from the ground, roll up to the tower, climb onto the tower (the hard part) then climb back off the tower on to the haul rope, and ride the rest of the line to the ground. The tower will be installed the old way, dig a deep hole, hold the tower where you want it and add lots of concrete. To anchor the haul rope our plan is to bury big heavy things as anchors and have a fixed tension on the system,
Tomorrow I’m going to try and get some more definite measurements, but for now I’ll attach a quick sketch. I need to make up some drawings for our steel gurus to look at and explore some options for making the cross arm, use a real one or to limit the eccentric forces on the tower make a mini cross arm from scratch. I’m happy patrol is being involved in the building of it that way we can get the features we want built into it from the start. The priority for now is getting the tower and haul rope up, secondary we will add platforms for an instructor to comfortably stand on and maybe a carrier (most likely an old yan chair.)
I don’t know of anything like this being built before, Does anyone have any thoughts or comments?
