Alps gondola crash kills nine

At least nine people have been killed and several others injured in a cable car accident in the Austrian Alps.
A helicopter dropped a concrete block onto the cables, causing at least one car to fall and others to swing violently, local media said.

Some passengers were said to have been knocked out of their cabin when the cables were hit. Most of the victims were reported to be tourists.

The accident happened in Soelden, a ski resort in the western Tirol.

Seven people were injured five of whom were in critical condition, according to the Red Cross.

More than 35 rescuers and several helicopters were involved in the relief operation.

The cable car company said a 750kg (1,650lb) block fell from a height of 300m (1,000ft).

The block was being transported for use in the construction of a telecommunications line.

The cable cars take visitors up to the glaciers on the peaks above the village for excursions or summer skiing.

The cable car line is about 2km (1,5 miles) long, with a 650 metre vertical ascent, and each car holds up to eight people.

The stricken route climbs to the 3,309-metre (10,919ft) Schwarze Schneid peak in the Oetztal area.

It's a pretty new Doppelmayr UNI-G 8 passenger gondola. I believe have pictures of the lift from one of my Doppelmayr World Books.

Doesn't really matter what make it is if you drop 1500 lbs of concrete on it. Its a miracle the cabin was hit, you would probably have to try that 100 times to do it on purpose. It was also interesting that some were killed by being flung OUT of one of the other cabins as the doors should be locked. A very tragic and unlucky event.

Yeah, it's a 2004 8-MGD with a midstation. Real nice installation, too. :(

This is absolutely horrific. I can't even imagine what was running through anyone's mind to think it was a good idea to haul something like that over top of a liftline.

This lift had the misfortune of having an inside derailment and long evacuation during high winds in November. There was discussion in a few European forums that the lift operator bypassed the derail circuit and popped a carrier off of the haulrope (empty at the time). Whether this contributed to the long evacuation is of course still under investigation.

I was told from a close source tha it was a concrete bucket that is used to tranport concrete, not a concrete block.
