towers are being flown on friday at Beaver Creek unfortunately this meant that I have not had a day off since a week ago sunday and will not get one till saturday. 12 ten hour days in a row can you say over time. Since we are getting a chinook the towers will be completely assembled and flown. I will try to take some pix.In other news concrete should be done at the top terminal by the end of next week and the under skin for both terminals arrived from Austra

I was mountain biking at Winter Park/MJ yesterday and payed particular attention to progress being made on the removal of the Outrigger and replacement of the Summit Express. It looks as if they have quite a long way to go on both. There were crews actively working on the Summit Express, some concrete forms were in place for the top terminal footers. Looks like they are reusing most of the tower tubes from the HSQ since most of them are still in place. In the parking lot at the bottom, there were some new tower heads and several sheave trains for the new HSS. The only progress on the lower terminal so far is construction of a new lift shack which still needs siding and grading. There was no apparent maintenence on any of the other lifts on the MJ side and all are still intact including Iron Horse and Pony Express.
On the Outrigger, the lone three chairs that stayed on the line all winter long (making Outrigger a "pulse triple chair" are gone and the power wire which stretches down the middle of each tower is gone. I did not get close enough to see if they had hauled the chairs away but all towers and haul rope remain intact. There is, however, a large blue spool near the bottom terminal of Outrigger so they may be preparing to remove the haul rope. This has certainly been a long lift removal, it will be interesting to see if any of it is still standing during the upcoming Winter season. There was also no other apparent maintenance going on for any other lifts at Winter Park either. The tow bars are removed off the beginner platter lifts installed last year but I have noticed most ski areas do this with their surface lifts during the Summer.

You probably won't notice any maintenance going on; with as many lifts at WP/MJ has it's unlikely that you'll come across people actively working on the lifts.
Outrigger: The 'power wire' is a communications line; it's illegal to run overhead power on a lift. The comline can carry a maximum of 50 volts by law, and most lifts run controls on 24. Were the three carriers left there for evac training purposes? I saw them as well and they were ideally placed for such an endeavour.

Thanks for the clarification about the wire running down the center of the towers, I have always wondered what that is.

I think the three chairs left on the Outrigger were for evac training although they had no chair pads on them. I was actually just kidding about the lift being a "pulse triple chair" that would be quite ridiculous.

What I meant by no significant maintenance on the other lifts is no chairs off line or haul ropes removed (except High Lonesome had about 10 chairs off line next to the bottom terminal). You are right, usually there are not actually people working on the other lifts. However, there was a crew working on the top terminal of Summit Express looked like making final preparations to pour footers for the top terminal.

Incidentally, when do they change a haul rope if they find they need to and how long does that generally take?

It takes about one week to replace a haul rope with a new one, but it can take longer depending on the length and vertical of the lift.

It takes longer to fabricate and ship a rope than it does to install it. usually you'll order the rope in the spring, then about mid-July start taking carriers off and preparing the old rope for removal. Now that we're :offtopic:

Brad- I can't get your page to open (my computer, not your page), but do you have the Imperial SuperChair/chair 9 listed yet? Since it was on, then off, then on again, I wondered if anyone had made any official announcements or anything like that.
