We just got back from skiing at mammoth for 4 days. We left on Wednesday 10 hours late, at 10 PM, and pulled into the mammoth mountain inn at about 5 am. It was a pretty crazy trip. We took a lot of stops along the way to avoid falling asleep. Since it was dark from the minute we left, I could not get any shots of tioga pass going east. I took pics today on the trip home, so I will post them at the end.

After we pulled in at 5 AM, I slept for about 3 hours and was on the gondola by 9 AM. I credit coffee and cliff bars with getting me enough energy to do so...

Climax (I took about 10 runs on this run for the first day because I did not have the energy to explore the limited terrain that was open)

Chair 23...I didn't know if they would open it up for the weekend (which they did) so I got some pics of it as I passed...

More pics of chair 23 will follow as I go down my long list of pics.

The main run at the bottom. They worked hard to keep snow on the lower mountain. By about 8 PM, a lot of the snow melted away, leaving huge bald spots. By next morning, they were covered up with more snow...

Thats all for the 1st day of skiing. More to follow...

I didn't take any pics on friday, so this is saturday...

Now that I had more energy, I decided to take a little hike to the left of chair 23 and do scotty's. There was a fairly narrow "trail" that prior skiers had cut out of the sun cups...

Time for tioga pass. I was taking pics all the way up, but the reflection off the car window was terrible, so I'll only post the ones I took when we stopped...

Looks fun. I wanted to go this weekend but it never materialized. Too bad you didn't go up by the conference center at june because the QMC cabins and hanger arms are hiding back there.

Wow, "Chair 23" upper terminal looks awesome. Is that a Yan?

I am really missing the boarding. I can't wait for winter again...

The Terminal is a Mammoth Creation i beleive. It's there to prevent the massive dumps from covering the terminal and to prevent excessive riming of the top terminal. The doors on either side are closeable.

Its mainly to keep the wind off. It's a yan lift that unloads on a windy spur of mammoth mountain. On a nasty day without the covering the haul rope would probably easily derail. It's nasty up there with winds to 150+ mph.

If you look closely you can see that a few windows were blown out this year. During huge dumps, the whole terminal can get filled in with snow and the majority has to be shoveled out by hand, espeically at the beginning of the tunnel.
