Well mammoth announcd that June Mountain is going to be part of the package plan for mammoth and they (CEO Gregory) says it has the potential to be successful. Some have said that maybe dave wants to hang onto the place for himself but thats not what is going to happen. This could be kind of sad because whoever buys it will probably just sell it (value: 3.5 Million) or close it down as Intrawest wanted to do. Gregory says june needs a bed base but I think he forgets they don't advertise the place and a simple shuttle system could do wonders. Its too bad he doesn't appreciate June I'm guessing if he had control it would be shut down. So who wants to help me buy the place?

Anyways heres the article from the Mammoth Times:

June Mountain and MMSA Stay Together, CEO Says

Times Staff Writer

June Mountain is not being offered for sale independent of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, according to Rusty Gregory MMSA CEO.
"Although we have had several potential buyers who have indicated that they would like to see us offer the Mountain separate from June Mountain ski Area, we are not interested," Gregory told a group of interagency managers and officials at a recent Mono County Collaborative Planning team meeting.

"It's a short term approach, one that these buyers say would generate $3.5 million right off, because at least some of them say they would immediately shut June down, and capture the operating costs that way. In fact, Intrawest wanted to shut it down as soon as they bought into the Mountain. But we, Dave McCoy and I, see it differently. We believe June can be a very successful resort - if we can get a sufficient bed base established in the community, and I believe we can," Gregory said, referring to the ongoing attempt by Intrawest Corporation to develop a series of lodging facilities in the tiny community of June Lake. Although the proposed "Rodeo Grounds" development, which would effectively triple the size of June Lake if built as currently proposed, has lost some of its earlier momentum in recent years, Mono County planners say that the project is still on the table. A revised development plan for the project from Intrawest Corporation is still expected.

"We believe that June Mountain could be a real asset to the whole picture," Gregory said." It's a very different kind of mountain, with a very different kind of community. Where Mammoth Mountain is wide open and sprawling, June is concentrated and the community is absolutely gorgeous. I know that people think we might hold on to it as part of the sale deal because they believe that Dave McCoy has a sentimental attachment to the place, but Dave is first and foremost a businessman. We want to keep June as part of the package because we believe it can be successful. And I see no reason to split it up and try to sell it as a separate resort [as opposed to selling it to be dismantled]. If they can run it successfully, so can we. Again, the key is getting enough of a bed base established there. Right now, I know that Intrawest is working on the entitlements that they will need to get the kind of bed base in place that is necessary to a sustainable resort. They are also looking at the water supply and working with the county on other studies connected to the Rodeo Grounds development."

In another discussion related to June Lake, Gregory said that although he knows that Dave McCoy supports linking Mammoth Mountain to June Mountain via a system of roads and lifts, he himself does not.

"I don't think we need to," he said. "There are only so many people that this area can hold, and although I know everyone would argue as to exactly what that number is, I personally am not in favor of a Mammoth to June connection. With what Dempsey [Corporation] has planned for their resort area and with full build out of the Mountain, I believe there will be enough people coming to this area. I would rather focus on making both resorts better and on emphasizing their unique characteristics."

Never skied there, never been there, but... whoever buys Mammoth, please don't shut June down! No more 'lost' ski areas!

Well if they do shut it down I would guess someone out in the world would want the place. As i've said it has a bunch of potential.

IMO, June Mountain has potential to be successful and make money. They of course have to invest some money into marketing the resort. I think the single improvement that would help it the most is to put a new lift on the face. Keep J1, but place a gondola to ride beside it. The up and downloading is an issue without that sort of lift.

June is a great mountain for families and teaching the sports of skiing and snowboarding.

On a side note, when was the last time that J5 was open? I rode it years ago.

I dont think it has been open for at least the past two seasons. Last season it still had the carriers on so it may have run the previous one (02-03) but im not sure.

I started going to June Mountain in 2000 and J5 was closed then and is still closed.

Whomever would close down June would be foolish. Not that I'm an advocate of development, but that area has prime development potential. The owner could develop slopeside luxury homes left and right of the bottom lifts, and terrain expansion would be easy to the steep peaks to the south.
