June Mountain is not being offered for sale independent of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, according to Rusty Gregory MMSA CEO.
"Although we have had several potential buyers who have indicated that they would like to see us offer the Mountain separate from June Mountain ski Area, we are not interested," Gregory told a group of interagency managers and officials at a recent Mono County Collaborative Planning team meeting.
"It's a short term approach, one that these buyers say would generate $3.5 million right off, because at least some of them say they would immediately shut June down, and capture the operating costs that way. In fact, Intrawest wanted to shut it down as soon as they bought into the Mountain. But we, Dave McCoy and I, see it differently. We believe June can be a very successful resort - if we can get a sufficient bed base established in the community, and I believe we can," Gregory said, referring to the ongoing attempt by Intrawest Corporation to develop a series of lodging facilities in the tiny community of June Lake. Although the proposed "Rodeo Grounds" development, which would effectively triple the size of June Lake if built as currently proposed, has lost some of its earlier momentum in recent years, Mono County planners say that the project is still on the table. A revised development plan for the project from Intrawest Corporation is still expected.
"We believe that June Mountain could be a real asset to the whole picture," Gregory said." It's a very different kind of mountain, with a very different kind of community. Where Mammoth Mountain is wide open and sprawling, June is concentrated and the community is absolutely gorgeous. I know that people think we might hold on to it as part of the sale deal because they believe that Dave McCoy has a sentimental attachment to the place, but Dave is first and foremost a businessman. We want to keep June as part of the package because we believe it can be successful. And I see no reason to split it up and try to sell it as a separate resort [as opposed to selling it to be dismantled]. If they can run it successfully, so can we. Again, the key is getting enough of a bed base established there. Right now, I know that Intrawest is working on the entitlements that they will need to get the kind of bed base in place that is necessary to a sustainable resort. They are also looking at the water supply and working with the county on other studies connected to the Rodeo Grounds development."
In another discussion related to June Lake, Gregory said that although he knows that Dave McCoy supports linking Mammoth Mountain to June Mountain via a system of roads and lifts, he himself does not.
"I don't think we need to," he said. "There are only so many people that this area can hold, and although I know everyone would argue as to exactly what that number is, I personally am not in favor of a Mammoth to June connection. With what Dempsey [Corporation] has planned for their resort area and with full build out of the Mountain, I believe there will be enough people coming to this area. I would rather focus on making both resorts better and on emphasizing their unique characteristics."
