I grew up riding one of those at Terry Peak, SD. It was initially installed as a Tourist lift but somebody suggested skiing in the Winter.
It was replaced with a Miner-Denver in '67 which got a Riblet drive in the '80's IIRC. Finally, a Doppelmayr HSQ was installed.

I know... :offtopic: ...what was it like to load/unload from those? I know they swung out when you unloaded and that they were not connected in the middle.

Slow! The line speed must have been about 300 fpm or so. One would stand up at the "unload here" sign. The unload area was dead flat. The chair would split and open up and pass by the pair of riders. One would then side step and push with the ski poles to get out of the way.

The first time I rode a "real" chairlift was in Colorado in '66. Wow! Was I impressed! Next ski trip was to JH in '67. I rode the Tram and was hopelessly hooked.....

Mine is the Discovery Fixed-grip Quad at Mountain High East. My personal photo is...trivia question # 1203. Nobody's answered it yet, so I won't say what it is yet.

My name doesn't mean I ski a lot. It means that I'm big, and I'm a skier.
