You don't see an inordinate number of surface lifts here, but some resorts are getting new ones. It does appear that they may be gaining popularity in some resorts.

I've noticed it especially so in learing areas. Probably easier for them to get the idea of how to ride up the lift and probably for low cost and ease of maintnence.

They are definitely cheaper than a chairlift. I totally agree with you.

If you're learning to ski, I think that you should have a short high speed quad. It would be easier to load and unload, and it would access short greens. I think it would help alot. Instead, lots of first-timers are loading and unloading on a low speed double or a surface lift. Anyways, just my opinion.

But you have to remember that little kids may have some trouble loading a HSQ. The surface lifts are better for people who are a bit more vertically challenged.

Plus it also makes it a little more chalanging for those learning so that when they go to get on chairs they are more prepared.

Yes, because if they are tall enough then it will be a breeze to get on a HSQ becasue they have already boarded on a faster lift.

PCMR says the main reason it replaced its beginner lift with a HSQ was to cut down on the number of stops due to beginners falling. They say it's made it a lot better, and they appear to run it at near full speed

A beginner with little lift experience might indeed have a little trouble getting on a fixed lift.

That's one of the reasons we're planning the gondola at Union Creek. For abject beginners, walking into a cabin has to be the easiest way to board a lift.

Getting on the gondola would definitely be easier than anything else. Yes, it might be hard to carry the skis and poles in the boots, but I think that it is easier if you are a beginner.
