Apparently the mainstream press has missed the Mt. Bachelor/Las Vegas owner relationship.

Forest Service reinstates operating permit for ski area.
The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort is reopening today on Mount Charleston. The nine o-clock reopening comes five weeks and one day after an avalanche swept a 13-year-old snowboarder off a lift to his death. It was delayed until after the US Forest Service investigated the deadly avalanche and Allen Brett Hutchison's death on January ninth.
The probe led to a stricter avalanche abatement plan -- and the hiring of a snow safety consultant. One of the ski area's three lifts remains shut down due to damage from another avalanche.
The following news release was issued Monday from the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort:
"To the valued patrons of Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort:
We are happy to announce Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort will re-open on Monday, February 14th . Hours of operation will remain from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
During the closure period, we have contracted with one of the world's foremost avalanche and snow experts, Mr. Chris Stethem, to assist us in strengthening our snow safety risk management program in the wake of the unprecedented avalanche cycle in January. One of Chris' associates, Mr. Mike Gajda, will be on staff at LVSSR for the remainder of this season. We have also revised our snow safety risk management plan to include active explosive control measures above Chair Two, and are studying other state-of-the-art delivery methods for possible future implementation.

Two interesting and somewhat predictable items have occurred at the Las Vegas ski area this summer.
1- Las Vegas ski area is openly advertising for a new Ski Patrol Director (at smaller areas this person also does avalanche forecasting and control) and they also have new openings for ski patrol positions.
2 - Nevada Senator John Ensign has secured $750,000 for a warning system for the ski area and the surrounding valley.
The details are unclear on how the taxpayers' money will be given to the private ski area where the destructive avalanche occurred or for training of their management on how to reverse the trend of failing to retain key avalanche control personnel at the ski area.
Also no details were given on how to fund the above problems that will last to perpetuity.
The press release did state that law enforcement were to be used for the implementation of the system but no actual details were given on how they would perform any avalanche control procedures.
