Ok I've been reading all of these topics about Yan quads so I'm going to try to start gathering Data on YAN hsqs. We know that there are 32 or 33??? So if we keep track of them we can start gathering info on them, this is a spreadsheat of the YANS that I know, let see who has some of the others. This file needs to be opened with excel as I can't seem to upload an excel file... :(

I believe that there were 31 YAN HSQs that were installed, but I could be wrong. Your best bet to gather info is from the lift installation surveys from this site at http://skilifts.org/install_na.htm

That should enable you to expand your list a lot more than what you have now. I have also contacted SAM Magazine to see if it has any information about the YAN HSQs as well.

What are you looking for- stats like vertical, horsepower, etc, or more general info like years built, grip design, and what have you?

You can add Silver Star's Putnam Creek Express to the list of removed Yan HSQ's. It's replacement, the Comet Express, was put in for the 2002-2003 season. There are also a number of Dopp re-engineered Yan HSQs at Sun Valley, Idaho. Check this site's chairlift gallery for details.

Other unnamed Sun Valley Yans were River Run, Christmas and Lookout Express.
In addition you forgot to add the Seattle Ridge quad.

This now makes it 27.

Actually instead of Frenchman's being installed in 88, it was Christmas at Sun Valley. I forgot to upload that page after i fixed that error.

The two that I know that are missing that would make 31 is the Summit Express at Mt. Snow and one of the HSQs at Sunday River which I don't know that name of.

Also as far as we know the Lake Louise Friendly giant was the last true Yan HSQ without any major mods? aside from the grips

I keep wondering that if Louise had decided to extensively rebuild their Yans just following the reported problems with the grips (like Sun Valley did), they wouldn't have had to replace both Friendly Giant and Top of the World so soon. The more I hear about it, those two original lifts sounded like they were maintenance money pits. What's the general feeling out there amongst you tech guys?

Even though I'm not a tech guy, in SAM magazine they did a fallow up telling resorts which Yan HSQ models needed to be modified to be safe.

Of the three YAN HSQ models that were built in North America, The Type 12, Type 11 and Type 7, the Type 7 was the only design that never had any reported problems. The only thing that SAM said that the resort should consider was grip replacement. I believe that Lake Louise had the Type 7 model so there probably wasn't a lot of money to modify it all. But you know, with that being the only Yan HSQ in operation at Lake Louise, it probably got to be pretty expensive trying to find spare parts for it.

Old Yans= bomber lifts.
Newer Yans= maintenance money pits, even the fixed grips. Gearbox issues, grip issues, sheave and sheave assembly issues...

The Type 7 did not have any reported problems, but I think based upon the failure rate of the 11 and 12 (the 12 did not even see full-scale production) it was only a matter of time.
Here is a breakdown of Yan grips as I have been able to identify them.
Type 1- old-style double chair grip
Type 2- " triple
Type 3- replacement for Type 2, used on triples and quads
Type 4, 5- prototypes of the Type 6
Type 6- rare fixed triple and quad grip
Type 7- most common detachable grip
Type 8, 9- prototype, I don't know if they were detachable or fixed
Type 10- rare fixed grip
Type 11- heavy-duty detachable grip (bubble chairs)
Type 12- prototype detachable

What do you mean by Bomber lifts? That could either mean really good or really bad.

Sorry- the term 'bomber' as I use it means good, excellent, foolproof, etc.

The Type 12 was designed for the bubble HSQs, because SAM did an article about the new HSQs at Whistler, Redline and Quicksilver and Quicksilver is listed as a Type 12.

I wish I had pictures of these grips to see how they were all different, but they were probably just minor changes, nothing serious.
