I didn't notice it before, but yeah, it looks like an old tower. Was there ever another lift that crossed under Giant Steps?

no, that is to hold up racing netting. giant steps is one of vail's racing trails and is where the world cup was partially held back in 1999.

why is giants steps being removed? too bad, it's an original lift on the mountain!

a question about the snow at vail:

Is it always that brown? Aside from the groomed trails much of mountain's terrain seems to have only a thin covering of snow.

The Giant Steps is being removed because it has become obsolete and according to one of the mountain hosts that I talked to yesterday it has run only 4 days this year and never for more than 3 hours each day. As part of vail's "New Dawn" they are rebuilding the Village base and the Lionshead Base and for the most part removing any remnants of the past. This includes lifts, original buildings, the old gondola departure, and almost all of Lionshead. This will start this spring. The web site with more info is Vail's New Dwan

Youre right that is the way that it reads. I hadn't had time to read the web site, I just knew that it existed. What I heard about it was word of mouth, I'll contact some higher ups with Vail Resorts and see if I can find our for sure what the timeline is.

I was just reading some new information about Vail and was wondering if anyone has some definate info about the original terain at vail. I've heard about 4 or 5 different versions of what was original and how it expanded. The most rescent that I have heard doesnt include Giant Steps as an original lift. This version is from Vail's web site and is to the effect that Vail had the Village Gondola and two doubles, one from mid-Vail to the top and the other down the back side(presumably a similar line to the High Noon?). I'm really confused right now about what was where. Does anyone have pics or maps from this vintage? In a few days ill go by the Colorado Ski Museum and library to see if there is further info I can dig up.

Also does anyone know if the 2001? instal of the new West Wall tow was a full new install? It appears that the only part redone was the return/tension station, because the whole lift is a grey/black while the tension terminal is galvinized.

I couldnt remember the year but I seem to remember the first one being the same but with a different tension terminal. I could be mistaken but the tension terminal just looks really out of place amongst painted towers.

Last I heard on this proposal is that they are going to run the Highline until it dies and its no longer financialy feasable to keep maintaining it. The last I heard was that since it is so under utilized is that it would be replaced with a fixed lift. Since the Riva Bahn replaced the Golden Peaks lift it is now more efficient to ride the Riva Bahn to the Northwoods to get to the top of the mountain rather than Golden Peaks to the Highline so Highlines use has signifigantly declined.

Minies could also be gone soon too. Now that it has been shortened it is very under used and is for the most part already obsolete. The maze has for the last few years has just been a way to ski onto the lift as there is never a line.

You are correct that the orinal lifts at vail are what are now 4, 5 and 16. 16 was a 4 man gondola and the other two lifts were doubles. I noticed that the picture of the giant steps lift states its a '61 lift??? That can't be? Was this lift relocated? I don't know the exact year, but I suspect this lift is closer to '65. Can anyone clear this up?

The towers are pre-'65 but the sheave assemblies look to have been replaced with the '70s versions. The carriers are also the shorter, 8' ones. Other than that, there's no way to tell a vintage.

How does the Riva Bahn make its turn? It seems to make a large turn in the map
