Well they may be owned by the same company but they each put out their own list.
West:
1 Whistler/BC
2 Alta/Snowbird (Alta wasn't found on SKI mag's list at all!)
3 Vail
4 Squaw Valley
5 Jackson Hole
6 Mammoth
7 Bill's Crystal Mountian
8 Big Sky
9 Aspen/Aspen Highlands
10 Fernie
Also is tips on skiing KT-22 and the famous Spankys Ladder.

skiing has way better ratings than ski. can you believe ski ranked whistler like... #7? thats downright insulting, i'll say. lets see if i can find it... ah, here it is. shameful. whistler got numero cinco.

I read in SAM that Skiing is more orrianted towards the younger crowds while SKI is for the older people. Older people tend to favor cruiser runs so I guess it kind of makes sense if you thinkg about it that way.
But what is weird is that Mt. Bachelor or Meadows isn't on there at all and I think both of these resorts were on there last year. Mt. Bachelor was ranked #23 I think, but it has no night life. I saw that Aspen Highlands appeard on there for the first time along with Kicking Horse.

Well, if that is Crystal Mtn. WA listed as #7 it has NO nightlife and night skiing might as well be a zero..... I like Crystal, but it should never be in the top 10 of the USA for ski resorts...
Where is Grand Targee and the other Utah resorts? That list is really lacking...... I'd like to know what they use as a qualifier for their requirements to be a 'top' resort.

Rankings are so subjective it's hard to put any stock into them. I rank areas differently than SKI would, for example; Loveland and Monarch rank ahead of Vail in my book because they have better snow and little to no liftlines. Crystal would also be up there based on skiing and liftlines. I don't look at nightlife because I don't stay at resorts (although if I did I'd give Whistler top marks).

Reading these ratings are great but every skier/rider has his own subjective opinion. For myself, I rate a resort based in the quality and quantity of snow, type of terrain, and lack of BS. Night life and four-star accomodation and fancy restaurants are of secondary importance. Thusly, I would give such areas as Big Mountain, Red Mountain, Targhee, etc a higher rating than some better known 'destination' resorts. For example, I know that Fernie now rates high with many but in the days since Heiko Socher sold the place to RCR, it has lost a lot of its 'charm' (gasp!) despite its many improvements. And I'm talking as a Snow Valley powderhound from the late 1970s, when my brother and I took a chance on this place that supposedly got mythical dumps of snow. We arrived and overnight two feet fell! Now, its just another overdeveloped and occasionally crowded resort that I usually drive past on my way to Whitefish or (this year) into the Kootenays.

I really want to give Red Mtn a try one of these days.... I read about it 5 or 6 years ago and all the pic's I've seen from others who have gone look awesome. Maybe when my kids get a bit older I can drag the whole family.
