CHAMONIX (AFP - 11:34) - the first sector of the cable car of the aiguille du midi is closed since on monday in the night. It ll be closed probably for all the month of august cause to a technical problem while a maintenance operation.

While an operation that consists to move the cabins on the rope each 200 hours, the conducteur didn't slow down the cabin. And when it arrived in the station it was in maximum speed. The accident occured on monday at 11 pm.

Only materials problems but they are very important. The station is injured and the cabin so, even the part on the rope is damaged.

The second sector will be reopen on the 4 or 5 of august.

It is the second accident of this cable car since the begining of 2004. It was already stopped between 10 may and 10 july cause to a fall of a rope while a maintenance operation.

end.

I hope you ll understand my very bad english.

Your English is better than my French... :crying:
Tough year for the Aguille du Midi. I heard about the haul rope incident; I think Ryan B posted the story a while back. So this time the operator ran the cabin through the back of the terminal?

Isn't the Aiguille du Midi Telegraghpique smaller then the Tram at snowbird (125 passengers {personnages}). Also on the Tram at least it has computers that won't let it run into the station at full speed or anywhere close I woiuld think that the Aiguille du Midi Telegraghique would have the same thing although I guess it doesn't.

Hi Eric,

the cabins of the cable car are 75 passengers on the first section and 65 on the second section.

You re right when you tell that in usuall service with passengers this accident couldn"t come. But monday it was a maintenance operation in manual service. They have to move the cabins along the haul rope. This operation is done all the 200 hours.

The manager told that when they are public in the cabines all is operated and controled by several computers. And of course one of these controls is the speed. If the speed is too high all the cabins are stopped.

Pretty wierd, if your job was to control the cabin, wouldn't you pay attention to what happening? It probably doesnt take more than 6 minutes to go down, but maybe the guy fell asleep.

Yes that is really curious..In France we don't get so many news the why of the accident. But we know that the conductor is a specialist of the cable car. It is at 1 month of the retirement and even he is driving instructor in the company.. That s really strange...
