If Don McClean gets his way, Steamboat Springs will have a third ski area again in a little over a year at the site of the largest ski resort failure in American history. His company, Stagecoach Communities LLC, is under contract to buy the Stagecoach property by October and plans to rebuild the ski area that opened in 1972 and closed less than two years later. Mr. McClean has 38 years of ski industry experience working at Alyeska, Telluride, Beaver Creek and Vail. “Our intention is to create a blueprint for responsible mountain development,” he told the Routt County Planning Commission. Investors include Bode Miller and others from the Vail Valley and Steamboat Springs. Two new Doppelmayr quad chairs are planned for next summer.

The old Stagecoach opened with three Heron-Poma double chairs in December 1972. It closed in March 1974 when its creditor abruptly pulled financing. The main lift named Big Hitch was relocated to Granby Ranch in 1988 before being moved again to Winter Park and eventually replaced by the Panoramic Express in 2007. Two other chairlifts, Little Hitch and Yellow Jacket Express, remain standing on the site and will be removed. The new high speed quad will replace Big Hitch in a similar alignment and the fixed-grip quad will reach the summit along the former Yellow Jacket Express route.

Mr. McClean surprised the County Planning Commission Thursday with plans to build temporary base facilities along with a high speed quad and fixed-grip quad on the 3,500-acre property that lies 18 miles south of Steamboat. He addresses the Commission starting at 99:45 of the Sept. 1st meeting which can be heard here. McClean noted, “[Stagecoach] will be a ski area built by skiers for skiers and riders.” Doppelmayr has already visited the site and bid the two lifts that will serve 2,200 vertical feet. The existing landowner, the Wittemyer Family, is working on the ski trails and mountain roads this fall. “It’s ready to go.” McClean said.

Do the lifts even run?

Edit: sounds like they're buying new lifts...

I was about to say, 'it's in the article'.... I should contact them and see what they're doing with the old lifts. We could use some Heron parts.

If you can wait a year your Powdrmates at Eldora will be removing their Heron. You need stuff for C-1?

Is the plan at Eldora still to replace Cannonball and Challenge with a HSS?

Yes. They are moving forward on the contact and lift line clearing should begin some time soon.

What did they do with the chairs from those abandon Heron lifts at Stagecoach (Little Hitch and Yellow Jacket)? Are they stored somewhere on the property or did they sell/ scrap them already?

Also I'm pretty sure they sold the old chairs long ago. I didn't see any around when I was last up in that area about 15 years ago. It sure would have been neat to restore the old Heron's but age and lack of maintenance and damage/vandalism I am sure more than took their toll and it would have been a big waste of money. Better to put that money towards new(er) lifts. I have to wonder.. do any lifts come to mind on where they were idle for many years and then brought back/restored to life and use?

I believe that 5 Chair at Loveland is a contender. It just hasn't been brought back to life.

Well while they have not run any pax on it for many years, I am pretty sure they have run chair-5 to keep it turning for maintenance purposes, as the chairs are never in the same position as they were when I drive up US-6 every few months.. Either that or my imagination is playing games with me.

When Brad and I hiked Stagecoach a few years ago, we actually found all the carriers from the Yellow Jacket and Little Hitch lifts under the never finished base lodge. They were placed there to probably keep them out of the weather.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just found out about this proposal and am curious as to the economics behind it. With 2,200 vertical feet and 2 lifts, I would not consider flying out to Stagecoach from the East Coast, let alone my home country in Asia, and neither would many other destination skiers, I assume. Is the market mainly Denver day-trippers, or will people come to the region to ski both Steamboat and Stagecoach, like an Aspen Mountain/Snowmass sort of thing? The website clearly states the developer's intentions to create a ski-in/ski-out slopeside suburbia on the site, but they also expect half of daily lift ticket sales to come from non-residents.

The website also includes a proposed master plan indicating as many as 10 lifts serving over 1600 acres at full build out. I suspect that will catch some attention from out-of-staters, especially as part of a multi-day visit to Steamboat. Just as people sample multiple resorts in one trip when visiting Utah, Summit County, Co, Aspen, and Tahoe, I suspect you'll get a decent piece of business from people who are looking for a little variety while they are in town.

If anyone wants it, here's a Google Earth overlay of the master plan. Does anyone know which lifts are supposed to be built?
