Whistler-Blackcomb Holdings — owner of one of Canada's biggest ski resorts — will be purchased by Colorado-based Vail Resorts Inc. under a friendly deal announced this morning by the companies.
Whistler CEO Dave Brownlie says Vail would provide greater financial strength and greater diversity through alliances in the United States, Australia and Canada.
Vail CEO Rob Katz says the combined expertise of the two companies will improve the experience for guests and preserve the brand and character of the B.C. all-season resort — which is about 125 kilometres north of Vancouver.
Whistler-Blackcomb shareholders are being offered $676 million of cash and Vail stock worth about $715 million — making the deal worth nearly $1.4 billion.
Whistler-Blackcomb shares closed in Toronto on Friday at $25.14 — giving it a market value of about $960 million prior to Monday's announcement.

Wonder if this will change the expansions/renovations they announced a few months back. Otherwise I doubt this will change much, Whistler already functions the same way as most big US resorts.

I've heard a lot of negative backlash over the merger, but it seems to me that locals, who are used to paying in the ballpark of $1600 for a season pass, ought to be ecstatic that the price will nearly be cut in half, and they'll receive access to another 10 mountains. However I would expect some of the perks that W-B offers such as free parking at Creekside and Blackomb Base II, and passholder discounts on food and retail will come to an end once Vail Resorts takes control. Also I wouldn't be surprised to see day ticket prices (which I believe were around $109 CAD last season) increase dramatically. To compare, a single day ticket at Vail during peak season was over $160 USD (or $209 CAD).

I'm glad to see however that Vail Resorts remains committed to Whistler's master development plan and their sustainability initiatives.

We're not really sure how this will all roll out. Will be an interesting ride for sure.
