interesting. I would agree that having a lift would make it safer due to avalanche control

The article is misleading; the photo and the reference to 'steep, rocky terrain ' refer to the Steep Gullies and not The Beavers. The two are adjacent but not synonymous. The Steep Gullies are outside of the proposed expansion.

Oh, the lynx. Most people haven't even seen one in CO, but you propose so much as an outhouse in the woods and it's suddenly lynx habitat. Bonus points for naming an anti -development the "Friends of XXX". Haven't seen that before.

Anyway....I could care less about the Beavers area, but would love to see Steep Gullies in bounds. Be some pretty choice terrain that has a nasty habit of sliding and killing.

A Basin is hardly the small mom and pop operation these days. Still a top tier mountain, but it's not exactly a secret.

Doesn't ABasin do some avi control in that area already?

It's all entitlement mentality. They don't want things to be on map so that most people don't ski them and they can have it to themselves. There's millions and millions of acres of backcountry in Colorado, and maybe 50,000 acres of lift served skiing.

True. Much of our backcountry terrain is all but inaccessible without serious effort, though, and our snowpack does not lend itself to safe skiing much of the winter.

Yeah. A lot of us don't want to or can't go on multiple day tours.

You can't really measure it that way. A huge amount of that backcountry terrain is inaccessible, beyond anyone other than Cody Townsend's skill level, unsafe, or requires a long tour. Plus, a true backcountry setup isn't exactly cheap, even used in a ski town.

Sounds good, I still don't think it is a good idea to remove Norway without upgrading Lenawee though. Current Lenawee triple would make a nice newer Pallivicinni lift.

It would indeed be nice if they could upgrade the rest of the older lifts. But if they're still going well and the lines are not too bad.. well..

Hopefully, they will install the new Beaver lift first before removing Norway. Lenawee is actually fine the way it is but Norway is needed for the weekend crowds.

Heck yeah - everybody goes to Lenawee and then there is a ~15 minute wait on weekends. I go to Norway and there might be a pair in front of me.

Keep Norway!

Agreed. Plus the thing never runs, so it has far fewer hours than other lifts its age.

I remember how the Peak 6 expansion to Breck was held up for a while by this concern. And those are the same people, I think, that were opposed to High Noon or Rose Bowl being upgraded to detachables, when those upgrades were needed because of the need for more capacity.

It can be a little infuriating, but their overreaction ensures there is always an adequate environmental evaluation. I guess I look at it as a necessary evil.
