New Zealand can be pretty bizarre at the best of times - and that's a good thing! I'm won't be surprised if the Kiwis managed to put some sort of twist on the old reliable rope tow. After all, this is the country that created bungy jumping!
Back in the early 90s I visited a couple of ski areas that required at least a 30 minute walk up to the lifts (they provided a cable car - called a Flying Fox - for your skis and gear though). I may have some NZ lift pics in some slides I took. I'll have to dig 'em up.

Possibly a nut-cracker style tow at Craigieburn?
Ski area info:

Description of a nut cracker tow: (Wish I could find a video clip)

Well the cross lift at Alta doesn't have sheaves on the rope you hold onto the sheaves are on the haul rope from which the rope you grab onto is hooked. I'll get some pics of that great tow up ASAP in other words as soon as my camera works.
