Big sky's tram's terminal is built on a rock glacier so the terminal itself is moving downhill and a bit to the right (using the picture as reference) therefor the terminal needed the mass and large footprint to be stable unlike the Mt. allen system that must be on more geologically static ground..

Does the Mt. Allen tram actually use the 'detachable' terminal to house machinery?

Yes, and it is a Doppelmayr, not a 'mock-Doppelmayr'.
