I'm not sure where it started, but I believe the term "CLD-260" used to describe first generation Doppelmayr high-speed detachable quads is incorrect. From what I've put together from the three Doppy detaches I have to work on, the CLD denotes "chairlift detachable," and the 260 should be the gearbox size. For example, we have a '94 "UNI" quad that's classified a 4-CL-D-235 ET, a '97 "UNI-M" quad that's a 4-CLD-245, and the 2008 Chondola which is a 6/8 CGD-270 UNI G. Each of the numbers pertains to the Lohmann gearbox of that particular lift. My guess is the CLD-260 came from the original Quicksilver at Breck as it was the first HSQ. Any thoughts or input??

I always thought it referred in some way to the lift using a cadence chain.

Yooper is right. CLD means Chair Lift Detachable and the number is the gearbox size.
These are the letter designations I've seen on the prints and manuals for our Doppelmayr lifts:
CLD
CLF: Chair Lift Fixed
MGD: Monocable Gondola Detachable
Doppelmayr's World Book uses the letter designations in the table of contents. It seems they stopped using the gearbox information.

I've also heard (as Razvan said above) the design and the passengers for carrier used.
For Example:
White Mountains Express Gondola @ Loon is MGD-4
Bethlehem Express @ Bretton Woods is CLD-4
Also a curious question, does 'UNI' stand for anything?

UNI is for unitary as in the lift is made of a group of standard units used in specific combination for the required design.

Over here the number always precedes the letters (8-MGD, 4-CLF etc.)
Regarding the UNI-G:

That's a very interesting terminal design. Looks like nothing I've ever seen before from Doppelmayr.
