That doesn't look good and it is a fixed grip lift.

A few hours after the official opening of the 2014 ski season 180 skiers and snowboarders had to be rescued from a crippled chairlift at the Argentinian ski resort of Catedral Alta Patagonia. A mechanical failure, that caused a number of chairlifts to loosen and smash into one another, has been blamed for the incident. Luckily no injuries have been reported.
The press officer of Catedral Alta Patagonia, Paula Gómez said that “it was just a technical malfunction that is common, and people who were in four chairs by a vertical rescue were evacuated. ”
This is not the first time Catedral Alta Patagonia has had a chairlift accident. Around this time last year a chairlift derailed causing injuries to eight guests.

Atleast it's a common malfunction, and nothing more alarming.

What a statement to make by the ski resort themselves.

Yikes! I'm pretty sure with proper maintenance and inspection, that's not common. That looks a lot like what happened in the Quicksilver accident.

There's a picture on this forum somewhere of the exact same lift in the same situation.

There is a video posted on transworld snowboarding about a similar incident at the same area. probably the same lift. Here is a link:

Funny how the rope catchers do not reach out and catch the rope when the carriers and rope become a sail.

Chairs stacking up because of loose grips and wind causing deropement are NOT similar.

I am going to come right out and say I object to the comment linking the 1995 quicksilver accident at Whistler to the Patagonia type of accident. The investigation of the Quicksilver accident reveiled engineering design defects in the YAN grip and it reveiled various maintenance problems derived from the engineered design of the grip. I am not going to go into specifics about the Quicksilver accident. I did read the investigation reports when they came out. The Quicksilver accident reports did not suggest in any way that Whistler left the grips lose by accident or through failure to tighten grip parts to manufacturers specs at the beginning of the season. . I dislike the implied suggestion in skierdude9450's comment that the 1995 Quicksilver accident was in any way close to being similar to the Patagonia incident. The guilty parties from 1995 have already been punished. if you want to comment or compare accidents that were 20 years apart, get the facts straight first.
