I'd be happy to get down-n-dirty with lots of pics and vids, but it'll have to wait about a week..... I'm gonna be pretty busy this week and weekend. But hopefully, this storm we're about to get DUMPS on us proper and leaves a good cover so I can get out on the slopes NEXT weekend. I'll get lots of pics of my new design.

Oh you should come to Australia... Mixed in with the modern quads and 6 packs at the major resorts we have a 50 year old Mueller double chair, a 48 year old, 1800 metre Riblet double chair and a 42 year old, mile long, poma-lift as well as quite a few ancient T-bars.

Some of the small resorts in this country mostly run 30 year old lifts purchased second hand from the big resorts. Finally, a small backcountry "club field" runs a 60 year old nutcracker lift, which has to be one of the oldest operating ski lifts in the world.

Maybe in certain Countries, but not Europe wide. In Scotland, nearly everything is older than 30 years, some stuff goes back to the 60's.

@Don, hanger is the term for the complete part that connects you to the lift rope (clamp, hanger arm, rope drum, seat); roller - or sheave battery is called the "wheelblock" leading and supporting the rope at the towers - sorry for the pure explanation but my English is really not so good to do it better...:blush:

A few countries are not able (Germany) or delayed overtaking the complete european cableway regulations in national laws so a few oldtimers could survive too.

The cableways directive is not retrospective. If it were (and the UK has a habit of gold plating EU standards) and there was an EU wide 30year restriction, Scottish Snowsports would practically have been wiped out overnight. The Meall Odhar T-bar at Glenshee in Scotland is in it's 55th season, though it hasn't been used in anger this winter, it run regularly last season but is pretty much being held in reserve as a back uplift these days. In 18 months the Coire Cas T-bar on CairnGorm Mountain will be 50, it's one of the absolute main stays of the mountain.

Here are the only two pics I had of my first attempt at powering my lift with a gas engine. Here is the big flywheel that I later replaced with a truck Tire. Notice that all my components are BOLTED TOGETHER,..... I havent permanently altered the appearance of the original sturcture any more than a few paint chips. (No new welds, no new holes, no duct-tape).

Here is the right-angle gearbox that my axle was attached to and powered by a chain and sprockets. (It was originally supposed to be belts and pulleys, but I hadn't considered that everything I was doing was LOW R.P.M, and therefore High-Torque..... and there was no chance of getting the belts tight enough to make this thing move, so I had to use chain and sprockets).

I really didn't want to use chain and sprockets.

And HERE is the all new design. After the mice destroyed my other engine, I was going to modify my existing design to accomodate the new engine and then re-engineer everything in the Summer..... but after properly analyzing the layout, I decided that re-engineering the new design was actually going to be QUICKER and easier than making the alterations to the old design for the new engine.

I can't tell ya just how much of an adrenaline buzz I've been on for the last month..... next winter is all I can think about. I'm looking to put some heavy elbow-grease into our old Sno-Cat,... getting some small gas generators and lights on at least two slopes,... and knocking down as much brush as I can so we can put this little hill back in it's proper performance and glory!!!

Many thanks for the pictures; it seems that you are a guy with a very high technical creativity cause your new drive is a very useful construction as far as you don´t have too many passengers on the lift. In this case i would be a bit afraid of car wheel traction problems specially at wet wheather conditions.
You have a very rare Doppelmayr lift cause the inclined movable self weight tensioning drive bridge at the lower station had only been used at a few Doppelmayr and one italian Trojer skilift.

Wet weather will not be a problem, ... the property owner has hired a local guy to install a new roof on the shack. He's only half-finished and will finish this spring.

So far, we've had three people on the lift at once and the motor never showed the least bit of extra effort, so I think it should have no trouble with six-or-seven people going up at once. And if traction becomes a problem... I made the linkage to the "Locking Lever" mechanism to be adjustable. I can tighten it up if it gets a little slippy. (Actually, my buddy's Daughter and her college buddies have been using the lift in my absence..... they MAY have had more than three people on the lift at once).

My Son and his buddies were telling me that my 3-1/2inch aluminum roller wouldn't turn the truck tire..... all it would do is slip. (I proved them wrong). I may end up using a smaller tire to increase speed a little. The speed is already comfortable..... but it wouldn't hurt to go about 20-30FPM faster.


Wednesday March 30 was the last day I used the lift. I was alone..... the Kid was hanging with his buddies and decided not to come along..... but it's snowing right now and coming down kinda hard. There may be hope for ONE MORE RIDE!!! (Can't do it today or tomorrow....... but I'll be watching the weather for tuesday April 5th).




Aaaaaahhhhhh................ I can't wait until December. :laugh:
