This is not really a "today" item, but since I arrived back from Salt Lake rather late last night I chose to post it today. Not of great interest to all, but maybe a red flag for some of you.
Yesterday, at the Huntsman Institute, I was told that my recently diagnosed lung cancer is of a treatable, curable type. The large tumor was flagged via a routine x-ray about a month ago and has since been scrutinized by every imaginable machine and method. Stage 2 / non-small cell / does not seem to have spread - further study pending.
I am a 50-year smoker - having successfully played the odds since the age of sixteen. I have always known, though - and some of you might want to consider the fact that "the house always wins".
Chances are I'll be "bailed out" by knowledge, talent and technology. It doesn't always work out that way.

It's been a while since the TODAY thread had a "today" post.
I've been working on my killer kitchen hood ventilator and a very cute circuit for putting two functions on one com-line wire (AC feeder / DC relays).

Not that we shouldn't at other times, but today we remember those who gave all in the line of duty.

Well, the last TODAY posting was 56 yesterdays ago. We're slipping. Seems like Kelly is the only one keeping the ball rolling these days.
This morning, CNN informed us that we are saved - the NFL lock-out is about to end. Never mind that the US dollar is about to get its ass kicked and that our national credit rating is in jeopardy for the first time in history.
The world has lost yet another 27-year-old drugged-out purveyor of what some call music, suggesting to me that the apocalypse may indeed be upon us. The not too surprising passing of Amy Winehouse was not foreseen by Nostradamus though, leading me to doubt the bastard's credibility.
In a seeming effort to add balance to the world's difficulties, Anders Behring Breivik - a Norwegian right-wing Christian fundamentalist - decided to act on his distaste for Muslims moving into his country. He did so by killing some 72 persons of assorted ethnicities. Go figure. At least he didn't disrespect the Quran - though it might have been a better idea. He will be leaving - the Muslims will be staying. Turning a lot of pigs loose would have worked better.
Finally, Emax returns to work tomorrow following the removal of a "bad lung" three weeks ago. He might be looking for work at a lower altitude.

Guilty, as charged. At my age advances, there are fewer and fewer "firsts".

Good observation - but my only bothers lately are work load (folks trying to help me out while I recover) and the upcoming chemotherapy. I can live with that.
That said, I'll offer the following:
On this day in 1813, the United States gets its nickname, Uncle Sam. The name is linked to Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812. Wilson (1766-1854) stamped the barrels with "U.S." for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as "Uncle Sam's." The local newspaper picked up on the story and Uncle Sam eventually gained widespread acceptance as the nickname for the U.S. federal government.
