Back in 1993, two skiers loaded the triple at West Mountain right as it was under the process of being shut down. They both spent the night in 8 degree temperatures, until they were found the next morning suffering from hypothermia and in shock.

When I worked at Crystal we had the following procedure:

1. Close the lift by not allowing anyone to load.
2. Call last chair number to top operator.
3. Put an orange construction cone on that chair.
4. Top operator would call down that last chair and cone arrived.
5. Shutdown the lift.
6. Top operator would ski the line to verify an empty lift after shutdown.

I made sure one of my guys were present at the station(s) to prevent any last loaders during shutdown procedures.

I realize your average day joe doesn't know much about chairlifts besides that they get them up the hill but still, I'm not quite sure how you get this idea that you can derope off the bullwheel by placing weight (not much mind you) on the haul rope.

Also the guy who thinks this movie was filmed at Telluride was interesting. Apparently doesn't ski Telluride much as I don't believe there are any lifts that look like Snowbasin's Stealth Fixed Grips.

At any rate, still looks like a pretty horrible movie in my opinion, one of those that you could drive a truck through the plot holes and what not.

Interesting to learn that people have actually been stranded overnight on a lift...

I was working at Killington in 93 and remember the West Mtn incident

A lot Midwestern areas call last chair and ski patrol is the last up. Because they are smaller and each run gets skied at close, a visual check of the chairs is also done. Some places also download the top operator. This person does a sort of visual check of each chair on the way down as well.

It seems that after last chair is called, flipping chairs would be a pretty effective deterrent. "There's not a seat on this chair; I guess I can't go up." (I guess not all chairs flip but most do.)

On the topic of the movie, I revert to my original comment on page 1, and I sure hope that there's a little more to the plot than they're stuck on a chairlift. Personally I have better things to spend $10 on.

Razor sharp haul ropes eh? Must be hard on the sheave liners! Glad our Thiokol didn't come with that option.

Hey! My old favorite Wildcat made it onto the big screen! They likely did most of the filming on that chair because it's never used except on the holidays or high traffic days. Only thing is, Snowbasin does not have night skiing.

Coming soon to our house by Blockbuster mail...hmmm...no waiting list for the film...

It's actually on Short Wait for me on Netflix!
