NORDEN, Calif. Sugar Bowl Ski Resort is installing a new chairlift to the top of Mt. Judah in time for the coming winter.
The quad lift will be able to deliver 1,200 people per hour to terrain already approved within the U.S. Forest Service special use permit boundary, previously only accessed by hiking, according to a Sugar Bowl press release.
Construction begins late July and should be complete in October.
The increase in lift capacity and lift-accessible terrain won't come at an increase in lift ticket pricing, according to the press release.
Operating as a mid-sized resort in Tahoe, we look to maximize our skiable acreage so that skiers and riders are free to explore more of the mountain, said Sugar Bowl's President and CEO Rob Kautz. And doing so will help to maintain our economic viability in the industry and on Donner Summit.
The Judah Bowl terrain will remain natural with no new ski trails cut marked at double black diamond on the resort's map.
According to Sugar Bowl, environmental impacts of the new lift should be minimal no merchantable trees (of commercially acceptable quality) will be removed, no roads constructed, no tractor grading required, and towers and the top terminal will be helicopter lifted into hand-dug footings.
The top of the lift should not be visible from Truckee, according to the release.
The new lift will also create more access to what Sugar Bowl terms sidecountry terrain, areas beyond the resort's boundary that are legally accessible.
Skiers and riders looking for a little more adventure will be able to sign up for professionally-guided backcountry tours, gaining the snow safety skills required to enjoy the sidecountry powder skiing just beyond the ski area boundary, said Sales and Marketing Director John Monson in the release.
For more information on the new chairlift, the ski resort or 2009/10 Sugar Bowl season passes, contact John Monson at (530) 426-6720 or e-mail jmonson@sugarbowl.com

Solitude to replace Powderhorn Lift with new quad
July 21, 8:07 AM
Solitude Mountain Resort, located in Big Cottonwood Canyon, has announced that they have begun construction of a new high speed quad that will replace the Powderhorn double chair. The $1.5 million project is the latest upgrade to Solitude's lift system which included last year's installation of the Apex and Moonbeam high speed quads.
The new Powderhorn lift (known as Powderhorn II) will begin at the bottom of the Sunshine Bowl, halfway up the mountain, and end in the same place as the current lift. The thinking behind a mid-mountain start is to allow expert skiers and riders the chance to lap the steep runs and trees without having to ski the beginner runs to the bottom. This also means that in order to reach Powderhorn II, skiers and snowboarders will be required to first ride Apex, Moonbeam, or Eagle Express. The higher speed and shorter ascent means the new Powderhorn II quad will whisk people to the top in seven minutes as opposed to 12 minutes on the old lift.
According to Solitude's website, Powderhorn II is not only being built to get skiers to the top of the mountain faster, but to also create “greater on mountain flow,” and to, “utilize pockets of terrain which are naturally separated by the layout and slope of the mountain.” In a nutshell, this means that expert skiers will stay in the steeps, and beginners will stay on the bottom, as the lift placement and terrain will “segregate” the different ability levels, which will increase the enjoyment of everyone skiing at Solitude.
Although many people won't be sorry to see the 70's era Powderhorn double-lift retire, others will lament the fact that yet another old, classic lift is going away. Skiers will argue that a speedy lift will cause powder to be tracked out much faster than with a slower double, while the flip-side will say that the less time spent on a lift means more time making turn on the slopes. Either way, progress can't be stopped and Solitude will have a shiny new quad ready for skiers to ride for the '09-'10 winter season.

Also, I don't think the Solitude lift will be high speed. Too inexpensive and the high speed part was only mentioned in that article, not on the solitude website...

Hyland Ski area is installing a new maintenance facility in order to expand and update the aging maintenance complex at the base of the South Triple Chair. Also, a new pump house is being installed in order to increase the snowmaking system's capacity and to allow the ski area to open more terrain in the earlier months of the season. Several new carriage-mounted Pole Cats have been purchased. Lastly, the chalet received new carpeting and some much needed work was performed on the floor beneath the carpeting. (we no longer have rotten wood) To prevent new water damage to the floor from melting snow, a drain system was installed beneath the carpet. The new carpeting is a HUGE improvement and makes the chalet look a fair bit newer.
I will post new pictures of the new maintenance facility when I get over there again.

07/24/09: A note from the president on the Worth Mountain chairlift
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
In late spring, we learned that the 40-year-old Worth Mountain double-chairlift at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl no longer meets state licensing requirements. After considering the optionsrepair the existing lift, replace it, or close the Snow BowlI recommended to the Board of Trustees that the best course is to replace the Worth Mountain lift. In making this decision, we weighed the recreational value of the Bowl and its economic importance to the region against purchasing a new lift when we are making significant budget cuts elsewhere at the College due to current economic conditions.
Replacing the lift is a significant capital investment; the estimated cost is $1.7 million. Each year, we routinely set aside more than $8 million in a renewal and replacement reserve (known as "RRR") that we use to maintain the campus infrastructure. We will tap this reserve in order to begin work on the new lift immediately, but we plan to reimburse the fund through a special fund-raising effort. Replacing the lift, therefore, will have no direct impact on our operating budget, since we set aside funds each year to cover these kinds of repairs.
Vice President Mike Schoenfeld and his colleagues in College Advancement have developed a plan to solicit longtime supporters of the Snow Bowl, including members of the local community, and I am pleased to report that generous donors have already pledged $600,000 toward the project. In seeking additional contributions, we will approach alumni, parents, and friends who have particularly strong connections to the College through skiing and the Snow Bowl. We also plan to sell a limited number of lifetime passes to the Bowl, which will further reduce our use of the RRR fund.
Since 1934, the Snow Bowl has been an integral part of our students and our communitys winter recreational experience. Countless children, students, faculty, staff, and townspeople have learned to ski at the Bowl and enjoyed the thrill of winter sports over the decades. In recent seasons, the Bowl has recorded annually between 50,000 and 60,000 visits by skiers and snowboarders. Our alpine ski team practices and competes there; the NCAA championships have been held there; and local ski clubs and scholastic teams call it their home mountain. The Snow Bowl is an asset that sets our College apart from other institutions. It also creates dozens of jobsdirectly and indirectlyand generates hundreds of thousands of dollars for the local economy via meals, lodging, ski and snowboard equipment rentals and purchases.
The new lift will be a fixed-grip, triple-chair transport system engineered and manufactured by Doppelmayr CTEC, an international firm that has built nearly 14,000 ski lifts in 80 countries. The per-hour capacity of the new lift will be the same as the existing double-chair Poma lift.
The project will require very little site work, as the new lift will follow the same pathway up the Allen trail as the existing Worth Mountain lift. We expect the new lift to be operational in time for this winters ski season, as we begin a new chapter in the history of our 75-year-old ski area.
If you would like to learn more about fund-raising for the Worth Mountain lift, please visit http://go.middlebury.edu/worthmtchair.
Sincerely,
Ron

Good idea, I've moved all the opinion posts related to Solitude into a new thread where people can argue as much as they like.

High camp is not being replaced it is just being modified. It's getting modified (wider) crossarms, new chairs and bullwheels (curtisy of heavenly valley) new gearbox (from old headwall chair) a new drive and new haul rope. Pretty close to being completly replaced bit not quite.

Would you be able to keep us posted on this project? I (as well as other members of this forum I would think) would like to see how a double chair is converted to a triple.

I would love to answer any questions that may arise, but I think that it might be more suited to start a new thread instead of using this one. I will start a new topic for this subject for any questions. I unfortunately will not be able to post pictures, and I may not be able answer all questions, but I will do my best to find any information that someone might want.
