Possible Lifts for Summer 2009

skierdude9450's Photo skierdude9450 16 Nov 2008

By December 2009, we will see a new Roosevelt Island tram in place. This new tram will be built by Poma and will be a 100-passenger tram with two completely independent systems. Article here: http://www.nyc10044....wire2902big.jpg

Cool, I was disappointed when my wife and I went to New York a couple of years ago, just days after the big tram breakdown. We stayed with friends in one of the apartment buildings right next to the tram on Roosevelt Island.

Surprising that Doppelmayr's $25 million bid was $10 million, or 66% more than Poma's. That's a huge disparity.

It happens all the time in design/build scenarios. If you don't give your contractors specific instruction you end up with two totally different products, and when your dealing with the government all they care about is dollar signs.

I think they want to do a full replacement after the major breakdown that it had. Yes Von Rolls are great machines however they do age and need replacement.

I see that the L-P website doesn't give you much in the way of specs.
Fixed Grip Quad, 200 HP; 1852 Slope Length; 788 Vertical; 1240pph initial capacity; 450fpm; 43 carriers.

That's a pretty steep lift. 43% average slope.

Actually 47%
slope % = vertical / horizontal (not slope length)

Pending a land swap with the USFS, Cannon Mt., NH may be adding a double chair on the old Mittersill Ski Area in 2009. They have been looking at using the old towers, but we'll see...

Depends on how they do $$$$ this season. If not this summer they are hoping for 2010.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I'm pretty sure Breckenridge might install a new lift on Peak 8 to replace either 6-Chair or Colorado. Especially with the new base area development.

Sun Valley to begin construction on gondola
Tuesday, December 30, 2008
KTVB

BOISE - Sun Valley is moving forward on its plans for a gondola.

The resort announced today it will begin construction on an 8-passenger fully enclosed gondola as soon as spring weather permits.

It is similar to one currently in operation at Heavenly in Lake Tahoe.

The gondola will take skiers from River Run to the Roundhouse restaraunt some 2,000 feet up Bald Mountain.

It is expected to be completed in time for the 2009-2010 ski season.

Granite Peak Ski Area at Rib Mountain State Park, Wausau, WI may be installing a High Speed Lift the summer of 2009. (It is planned for 2009 according to their brochure for this season). They have been planning a second high speed lift for some time to replace the Donner FGT, not sure if it will be a HSQ or HSS (I would think HSQ would be sufficient). This would be their second high speed lift, in 2003 they installed Comet Express - HSS, Leitner-Poma, 400 HP Phat Boy without 'the stack'. With the economy we will see if they go ahead.

Meanwhile, Lutsen will most likely be snubbed yet again...

I heard they are talking about putting in the other half of Naked Lady... I thought I heard about them saving the extra towers and chairs to install with a new drive and return as a completely separate lift.

I can't see Lutsen getting a high speed anytime soon though.

Well yes but Granite Peak is much closer to attract the Chicago crowd.

I don't think Lusten will get a high speed lift in the near future. If they were to get one were do you think they would put it or where do you think the most logical spot to put it is? I would think they would put it over on Moose Mountain.

I think that they would either replace the crumbling Caribou chair or run a new line between the Bull Chair and Caribou Chair, since it wouldn't make sense to remove the Bull Chair and replace that, since it serves only 2/3 of Moose Mountain. If they totally remove Caribou, they will likely reuse it elsewhere. Bridge Chair also needs an upgrade, though, and I can see them replacing that with a larger-capacity fixed grip, perhaps even the other half of Naked Lady. There is also talk of a lift on the back side of Moose, which could also be a use for the other half of Naked Lady, or the Caribou chair, if they removed it.

Also, since they have installed the Naked Lady Chair, I see no need for the aging Muller Eagle Mountain Chair, since it serves the same terrain plus Brule Run. Losing that chair would clean up the mountain from a visual perspective, and they could always run a second catwalk below the current one that serves Eagle Ridge so that more of Brule Run could remain open. There used to be one, but it eroded away due to improper care years ago. Really, there are limitless possibilities. I might attach a map later showing some of these.

The logical spot for me would be to replace a chair on Moose. Considering traffic flow on Moose I would say the Bull chair would be the best location.

Bruce Mound, Wisconsin will be getting a new triple chairlift from Superior Tramway. It sounds like it was supposed to be done last summer but Superior didn't have it ready in time.
