I was just up at boyne mountain (highlands and nubs also) this weekend, and it doesn't look like they've done much on the new quad lift. I didn't see too much going on. The new chairs where in the parking lot but I didn't see any new towers installed yet? I asked ond of the guys there if the lift was going to be ready this winter and his reply was "define winter, I could imagine it possibly being completed by the end of march 2009." I also noticed the master plan in the condo sales office (I'm thinking about getting a condo at highlands :w00t: ) indicated that the meadows was supposed to be a HS six pack with another HS six pack over off disciples. They didn't give dates but I thought it was interesting.

They ordered the lift late. Besides the towers, bullwheels, and motor room, the lifts there. :w00t: The conveyor and loading gates are currently being installed. They have the talent there to finish, if they get parts. I could see a HS on Disciples, because of relative chair length and company-owned real estate developments there.

On the Lutsen web site, they are advertising the 'new' triple chair. No picts. They state that it will run from the daylodge to the top of Eagle. That will make it nice for doing laps on the front side, now that the t-bar has been gone for a while. On a side note, they are reopening the 'Plunge'. Its narrow and steep(a big rock), for about 100 ft, followed by a mile catwalk.

I have not seen it for myself but others have stated that the concrete is poured and the towers are in place or are being placed. Sounds like they are on track to open it this winter.

Regarding the plunge, Never had the opertunity to ski it in the winter but I have hiked it in the summer and I always thought it was a 98% grade that was more like 250-300 feet long.

The Plunge is supposed to open from what I have heard. From what I've been told, they purchased a PB300W winch cat and plan on grooming that run.

The new lift at Lutsen is the former Naked Lady lift from Snowmass.

Correct. The name will be staying with it. Apparently, the Lutsen maint. department felt it was bad luck, just like with ships, to change its name.

I am glad to hear that Naked Lady will live on! Will it be the same length as it was at Snowmass? That was one LONG ride up! About 15 min if I remember correctly.

I heard that actually it was the Aspen crew that had said it was bad luck, and that the Lutsen crew agreed to keep the name because of that. But yeah, the Plunge is just wicked...I can see the ski patrol waiting at the bottom already (standing out of the way, of course ;) ). Waiting on lift pics...

Talking with the LM Boss from Lutsen, he said their plan is to eventually make 2 triples out of it. They have enough towers, chairs and cable. They would eventually buy new drive and return for the second install.

Hmm two Naked Lady lifts.. not bad. Naked Lady, and Naked Sister? <grin>

They are getting a very good lift. Hope she lives on for many years to come.

That actually seems like a great idea. I bet it is a lot more affordable than buying two used lifts and scrapping a big usable part of them.

Only in the interest of accuracy, #2 on the list, the Eagle Chair at Badger Pass is a triple, not a quad. :)

Wasn't this lift planned to be a quad?

On the topic of new lifts for this year, I'm noticing some interesting things from Doppelmayr CTEC this year. There continues to be a complicated mix of terminal models being built.

Detachable Models:
Uni-GS - 3 Lifts (Park City and 2@Solitude)
Uni-G - 4 Lifts (Tremblant, Snowbasin, Sunday River, and I'm assuming The Canyons)
Uni-G Viper - 1 Lift (Keystone)

Fixed Grip Models

Uni-Star - 5 Lifts (Hidden Valley, Alyeska, Boyne Mountain, Mount Baker, and Saddleback)
Galaxy III - 2 Lifts (Snow Valley and Whiteface. This is the model that is the successor to the Galaxy II, I don't know what it is actually called but it is basically just the Uni-Star with tension.)
Sprint - 3 Lifts (Boreal, Bear Creek, and Meadowlands Xanadu)
Echo - 1 Lift (Welch Village)
Uni-G Fixed - 1 Lift (Mont Saint Sauveur. I'm not sure the actual name of this model, it is the fixed drive terminal with the Uni-G cladding.)

I still haven't seen pictures of The Canyons, Ski Beech, or Badger Pass so they are not included in the above list.

As for chairs, it appears to be about a 5 to 1 ratio of EJ chairs to "Vail" chairs this year so far. I thought the EJ ones were going to be discontinued in 2003?

Has anyone seen what the new Echo Terminals are going to look like?

Back when the Yan was put in, there was the option of hanging quad chairs on it but it never happened. The new lift being put in right now is a triple and the idea of a quad was considered but never seriously.

Badger's bottom terminal (drive) is going to be a Galaxy motor room on a Yan height adjustable framework and the return will be mounted on the Yan mast. Here's a pic of the Yan motor room being dismantled, the new unit will ride on a framework attached just inside the big tubes that say "Eagle".

What's the reason on why the Eagle lift is being replaced with another triple?

The lift doesn't seem that old if it's being replaced by one of the same capacity.

Multiple issues with carriers, grips and aluminum sheave trains both with our lift and with lifts at other areas. To keep the Yan in service, we were looking at major upgrades and it seems the ski lift industry doesn't want to assume the liability it would take to retrofit these lifts anymore. We are reusing the standing steel, the Yan towers are getting new caps and a much different profile, one tower is being lowered about 17'.
